You'll be better served by getting trusses. Cheap, plenty available and already treated. Plus, the prep work to get them to the right dimensions is FAR less.

never thought of it as option, thanks will consider.

Capies, i need your help please. do you know of anyone in Cape Town you can supply timber decks like these?

I'm searching Google at the moment but thought i might try here too as i'm sure locals might have better knowledge.

That is correct, we are a shelving and racking manufacturing group in Gauteng and i am now in need of supplying Builders down in the cape, but i want to try and get it locally there instead of up here and then having to transport it all the way there.

Aha - sorry - no idea who can make it in CT - must be someone who makes pallets

http://www.barose.co.za had the pictures on their site - maybe they will know - looks like they are CT based.

Anyone with a handmade chess set? I've got an itch that I need to scratch ... been threatening to build one for 22 years now ...

Guess it's time

Yes - ebony and ivory - hand carved - LOCKED away for the next 30 years - inherited from my grandfather and stored at my dad's house - away from my chess playing kids.

I think he got it during WW2 in Pakistan - the pieces are super intricate and quite big - king is about 100mm tall - actually quite difficult to play with they are so big, although the board is a standard sized board.

Also have a few wooden travel box sets I bought in India 0 about 150 x 75 x 40 when  closed - but the pieces are not wooden - think they are some sort of metal.

I made one from African Rosewood and Wild Olive, I think about 20 years ago. Turned it on a small metal lathe to the "classical" shape. The difference between the black and white pieces became less obvious over the years as the Olive darkened. I'll take pictures when I get home tonight.

I've Googled and Pinterested so many chess sets I'm seeing things ... lol.

I think I'm going to make Rosewood and Beech top, small table with two drawers and turned legs ... but still not 100% convinced.

Nice! speakers always sound better if there is a nice bit of finished timber visible :)

Talking of speakers, I want to build a big bass bin for a  18": driver, found a few options for designs but the designers generally specify fancy plywood:

ie 13 laminate 18mm Birch Ply

I have asked around a bit with the usual suspects  and drawn blank vacant looks. One gets that shutter ply (which has its uses) and marine ply, generally thinner. Anyone have idea when I can get this?
