Cyclists flying overseas with bikes on Emirates

Recommended Posts

Hey j Wakefield many thanks for the reply .

Did you not pay extra as you only had one 23kg luggage bag ?

If that’s the case, any idea what the cost is of the extra luggage under 23kgs - more specific my 22kg bike bag .

Thanks in advance ..

No extra payment for any of us.

I flew with the following:

Bike bag - with stuff inside additional to bike  22.7kg

Bag with clothes etc - 18kg

Carry on 8kg

  • 2 weeks later...

How strict are Emirates on weight of luggage. Have purchased 2 extra bags of 23kg. The one box is 22,8 kg and the other is 23,75kg . Will they let this slide or are hard and fast on there 23kg’s.

I just got back from a trip to EU, although we flew with Qatar.

The same rules apply with the 2x23kg bags.

However with DH bikes and bike bags it is impossible to stick to that.

Bike bags were 28kg

luggage bag was 18kg

Hand luggage was 7kg

As long as the max weight of the bike bag is below 30kg and the combined weight is within your allowable 46kg you should be fine, although I have heard of people complaining about Emirates recently.

Just a quick update to my flight with Emirates. Although the flight & booking in procedure of bikes was good. I am horrified at the damage that was incurred during the bikes passage to the uk.

I wrapped the whole bike in bubble wrap, wheels in padded bags and cardboard & blue thick sponge in the vital areas for extra protection. Pics of the box are from the airport. I could see it had been miss treated and took precautionary pics, never once thought to the extent as per pics. Am glad now I actually took the pics .

Am so bummed .

Airline will only pay if it was in a hard-shell bag.

YOH! Sorry Pikey.

But for everyone else there is a lesson in your misfortune.

1. If you do use a cardboard box force yourself to use TWO rolls of packing tape to reinforce the box. TWO. I also chuck in 2 rolls for the return journey.

2. And take pics of the open box before so you can refer back to it when you come home.
