Andydude, which event was it that your Dad fell?

Coming into the valley on the adventure we saw the helicopter drop a medic off for a guy who was in bad shape with facial injuries.

Rock'nRolla, was good to meet you!

Next year, we will for sure have some cold ones.

MrsSlowbee just had to deal with some neck issues from a stupid bull!

My first Sani and did the Adventure. What can I say other than it truly was an Adventure, particularly Day 3! Weather on Day 1 was beaut and had a great ride, may have burnt a few too many matches though.

Day 2 was tough, from that first water point to top of Iconic was hard. Combination of possibly going too hard day 1 and also getting minimal sleep due to a moose snoring in the tent next to me (next year I pack sleeping tablets). Started *** but finished reasonably strong. The set up at Jolivet made up for the tough day however.

Day 3 was wet and muddy but I still preferred it to day 2 - must be an awesome day in the dry. The conditions on day 3 made for PROPER mountain biking and gave your effort that much more gravitas. The admin at the end was painful ie trying to shower in the rain and then collect the car etc but that was only due to the rain - if it was sunny no issues.

All in all a great sense of accomplishment and will return to get my own back on day 2!

For those who finished, well done that was proper tough.

Had a good weekend's racing considering the mud but I feel for my bike and now my pocket.

Now that the dust (mud) has settled here is my summary:

We completed the Race and weather and conditions on Thursday was perfect. Not even that cold at Glencairn. New single track sections added and finish up to Mckenzie Club was different but still tough. Winning time around 10 minutes slower than last year. It started raining Thursday at Mckenzie and never stopped until Saturday morning at Jolivet. Call made by Farmer on Friday morning to delay the start and we went out on district road and a stretch of tar to rejoin the normal day 2 route approx 30km from Jolivet. It was untimed and you could ride with mates but had to ride to be classified as finisher. It was freezing cold and wet and windy. Didn't find the mud too bad. Spur stop had hot chocolate and coffee which was awesome.

More rain on Friday and some of the tents were wet but due to number of riders that bailed there was plenty spare. Managed to sleep on a dry mattress. Saturday we had a couple of drops but not continual rain. Closer to the coast the trail was not nearly as muddy and sections through the sugarcane fields were super smooth. Scottburgh was a welcome sight.

Positives: New showers at Mckenzie Club and new sections on day 1.

Negatives: Unpacking box in parking lot.

It was unbelievable to see the enthusiasm of marshals and support staff in the atrocious weather conditions. I'm glad we pushed through and finished and I certainly missed going down the Umko but don't feel cheated or short-changed. It remains a world class event and we will be back next year.

Well done Farmer Glen and crew!

Give this man a Bells.  Great summary.

Tough 2nd and 3rd day, but do-able with 500mg HTFU tablets taken every 8 hrs.

Well done for kicking our arses on day 3.  We took it easy, and the chainsuck was really bad, but you gained a 20min odd margin!! See you at the next (dry) race.

I'm not looking froward to checking the damage to our bikes but glad we had no mechanicals besides some gears slipping for a while.

Day 3 was a good challenge, especially between the mixed teams.

Coming back home to 2 sick kids made our mud challenge look easy :)

My wife is keen to come back and do the Trail or Adventure and enjoy the scenery... being maxed out every stage isn't her idea of fun.

Have you done the Umko Drop in pouring rain and driving winds before?

Have you ever done it in less than perfect conditions?

Believe me, the organisers (Farmer Glen and Co.) knows that route very well, and they would not have made the decision if it was not in the best interest /safety of the competitors.

I agree.

Watch the videos of days 2 and 3...then decide whether the umko drop was possible for 1500 riders.

My view is that it would've been impossible to ride in that weather with soaked trail.

I was pretty stuffed after every stage on the trail :)

Yeah, A bunch have skills, and from there on it's weekend warriors all the way down to J...

I "rode" down there when it rained heavily the night before. We spent more time lying on our sides in the mud than we did riding our bikes. One minute you're riding in a straight line. next minute you're lying face first in a foot of mud. And luckily for us, the rain had stopped.

I know of one person who had to be airlifted out.

Thankfully, you're not a race organiser...

that video reminds me of a day on the pioneer trek. Riding a fatbike with badly worn semi slick at the back into George. I spend more time going sideways then forward. The best technique is to bounce of tree pretending you are inside a pinball machine.

Did my 6th Trail, and we had a great ride! We've always struck it lucky with the weather on the Trail and this year was no different. In fact, probably the best weather yet. Sorry to hear about the wet conditions for the race. Rain was the main reason why the event was originally moved from Feb to May, but ensuring a dry ride is unfortunately just impossible.

We did a Day 0 ride up to Sani pass. Spectacular ride and the highlight of my week. Lunch and a beer at the highest pub in Africa. 1500 meters of climbing over 20km. That last switchback section on the pass is brutal and makes Iconic look easy, especially since your over 2500 meters above sea level.

We expected the ride to cause some tired and heavy legs somewhere between Day 2 and 3 but it never did. We just became stronger every day. We smashed our fastest Sani time by over 2 hours. Memorable week indeed, but that Day 0 ride up to Lesotho takes the cake.
