A vertical shock is better...

No we won't, because of all the other contributing factors, other suspension designs are better!

I said less pivots are better, not less pivot points make a better suspension design.

Less pivots like a hardtail?

Do you agree with my follow up post?

Asking anyone to agree with anything someone else posted on this thread is surely a fool's errand.........

Okay let me clarify the above. If you're developing a suspension design (take Knolly's suspension design as an example) and you're trying to decide between 2 designs that have the same characteristics (stiffness, travel, leverage ratio, anti rise, pedalling performance, instant centre etc etc) but THE ONLY THING that separates them is one has 1 more linkage than the other, then yes agreed the one with fewer linkages would be the better option if only for the extra simplicity and lower cost of servicing.

If the one with 1 more linkage is measurably different or is closer to your desired end result than the one with fewer linkages, then the one with more linkages is better for your desired purpose or outcome.

Further than that, you cannot say that fewer linkages or pivots makes a better bike. It's just not true.

This, end of story.

I remember some great bikes that ended up as a bit of disaster BECAUSE they did away with extra pivots. Yeti's 575 is just one of those.

But let's all hear it for some bikes that have shown some promise, but could have been so much better if only the designers mounted the shock vertically. *Sigh*

...looking at these I'm surprised how many bigger bikes (where proper suspension is infinitely more important) does in fact NOT run a vertical shock. I'm actually starting to think that maybe a horizontally placed shock...

No, you are wrong, just because.

This vertical shock design is better because it has the LEAST linkages and pivots and weighs the least!

You know, I've always looked at Pinarello's and thought there is something missing. I could however never place my finger on it, but thanks to this thread I have finally figured out what that "thing" was and have set about a comprehensive upgrade design of a bike that showed promise but could just not deliver on that promise until today.
