My real wheel pulls left into my frame. This is a new bike - i've had it under previous heavy loads and have done about 400km on it now. Suddenly just now I heard the tire rubbing the frame. The quick release was correcly stiff. I've tried to make it even more still. But the wheel still moves. Even while i sit still on it - with a light pedal holding the brakes it moves about 3cm into the frame

axle may be bent or broken - remove wheel, take out quick release and check if its straight. If its bent then axle is bent. If axle loose once QR out, probably broken. Or bearings/cones have worked loose or collapsed.

A friend of mine had a Scott hardtail with the same ailment. Turned out that the slot for the hub in the frame wore out. No amount of tension on the qr  (qr 135mm hub) could keep it from moving. Scott replaced the frame with a new one.

I opened it up, but it's frustrating as I don't even know what to look for, The axle looks fairly straight (its a thin long pipe with threads at the end where the quick release binds on then on either side are bolts. If that's the axle... It does move around, there are bearings inside, but it just goes throw, and it seems to wobble around on the bearings.

I still don't understand why the wheel falls towards the chain even if the QR is gripping it tightly. I guess I'll take it to the shop, I cant seem to make sense of this.

Seems like "they" like everything just don't manufacturer goods properly anymore. I have a R900 old rusty and caltex lubed bike from the 90's and never have I had to replace anything. 10's of 1000's KM still doing just fine.

Thanks for the input. I was 5km from home, thinking I could quicly tie down something... Guess my weekend rides are over.

Yes the long thin pipe with external threaded ends is the axle. It should turn smoothly on the bearings and not wobble. The bearings may be faulty or need adjustment. There are 2 possible types

1) cup and cone...these can be adjusted. Will need cone spanners

2) cartridge bearing....if these fail remove and replace

In both cases, since bike is new, take it back to where you bought it.

Another possibility is that the axle is not centred in the hub correctly.  On either end of the hub, between the lock nuts and the end of the axle, you should see 4 to 5 threads clear of the nut on both sides.  More than that can cause the skewer to bottom out on the axle instead of engaging the frame and it will not be effective on that side.  To check for loose cones hold a seat stay in one hand with the other on the tire.  If you then rock the tire towards each seat stay you will feel play if the cones are loose.
