This is why motorists get annoyed

Duh ....

My humor completely fails me ....

I drive as close as possible, as slow as possible, drifting the cyclists onto the side/pavement with a middle finger salute.

Prepare for the odd dent if you do this when I am around....

Please note - I am all for sharing the road responsibly with other users - but that kind of behavior you are proposing is like pre-planning murder.... and you need to re-evaluate your priorities in life - get a grip mate - before you kill someone, or cause them to visit me professionally.

you would be surprised to know that there are still cyclists who use the road here when there is a perfectly functional cycle lane.

A bit like cyclists riding down dodgy track with jumps and **** in the way in Tokai when there is a perfectly good functional gravel road that is RIGHT NEXT TO the said bush track.

Sorry I don't see what's the problem ...

We all pay tax ...

Last time I checked a cyclist has exectly the same right as a motorist ? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Regardless if that was a slow car ... what whould you do ? Wait for safety and pass ?

So why not treat a cyclist the same ?

Sorry I'm finding it hard to grasp the anger for road space ? The more cyclist, the less cars on the road equals less traffic ?

Win win ?

Perhaps you will want to have another look at the rules of the road - It says very clearly Keep Left, Pass Right. Bicycles are normal road users and have every right to the road - just ride behind each other, NOT NEXT TO EACH OTHER, unless in the process of passing. That is my frustration with road cyclists - they have your attitude, and think it is their right to ride in bundles all over the lane.

All over greenside this morning groups of cyclists riding like this. One thing doing it in the cradle, completely different doing it in the suburbs. The guy behind me was getting very agitated. Ultimately we the ones that get hurt.

WTF - bikes riding sideways like Spiderman would!

so let's play this one out .....

guy behind you is aggrieved, races away past cyclist, they might be a little shaken by his speed...and maybe he is a little close to the group, driver carries on at speed, and is now irate, in his current state of mind he jumps a red traffic light due to not really paying attention. he hits another car killing a bread winner for a family. they loose a loved one and the sole income earner in the household. the ramifications of this are huge.

cycles carry on cycling and get to talk about how the car came speeding past them, and having no clue RE what the ultimate end result was.

now the above is a "fairy tale" of note ... but I am sure could also be rather close to the truth.

It could be but the car driver has no excuse at all.  Most commentators here tell cyclists to placate the drivers out there. Basically ride in the gutter so these rage ridden drivers are not offended and lose control. The problem with that approach is it does not work either. No matter how close to the kerb you ride, there will always be a shitty attitude from some drivers just because. Somehow the base(ic) attitude of many of our SA motorists needs to change. How I do not know.

I am not trying to condone the riders in the pics behaviour but a single pic hardly tells the entire story. It looks like a quiet road - maybe? Perhaps there was no traffic so the riders doubled up for a brief chat and then moved back in single file when the cars approached? Maybe not but I can imagine this happens a lot. Then there are all the other reasons why a cyclist might stray from the kerb - eg a broken bottle in the road, a pot hole of note etc.

Much as I advocate tolerance from drivers and try and apply this when driving too, I also believe that cyclists should do their bit and change their mentality. For instance, use the verge on your mtb, not the tar. Even on a road bike its possible at times. Like riding up from Houtbay to Constantia - very narrow and when a bus or large truck approaches from the rear its quite easy to hop onto the gravel with a road bike and allow it past. Don't do that and the heavy traffic just gets slower and worse. As  drivers it must be easy for all of us to imagine how we can facilitate safety for cyclists and vice versa.

Jbtw.

The 1m passing law only applies in the WC (as has been said) and it also states that a vehicle may cross the solid white line in order to do so as soon as it is safe to do so.

The earphones by-law is also only in the WC.

Except maybe for Millerton/CT I would dare to say that all cycle lanes here are dangerous if you travel faster than 15km/h. So no good for training. I especially love the bollards at some intersections - safety 1st.

I was going to say the same thing about crossing a solid line in order to overtake a cyclist if it is safe to do so.

When we get knocked over and don't make it home, what are in the law books become irrelevant to our family when we didn't make it. So as cyclist we should really take care.

Yesterday at 1pm I went up chappies with my family in my 4x4 from Noordhoek to Hout Bay. Now everyone loves going for a drive / ride to enjoy our beautiful city. But would I ride my bike up Chappies midday? hell no, in fact I've got a rule that if I can't pass though Kalk Bay / Constantia Nek & Chappies at a certain time early in the morning I don't go there. Despite my 'rights' to the road as a cyclist, there is just no space when things get busy.

I passed 5 cyclists up to top of Chappies, they were all hugging the pavement as close as they could. But giving them the 1m-1,5m space without knocking into the oncoming cars does become a moersie challenge. The moment I pass them I'm on the oncoming lane. But I'm a cool oke and took my sweet old time until it was absolutely safe for the cyclist and me. It took me awhile, I had loads of patience, was in no hurry and a cyclist myself. Can't say that about all motorist. So yes we have rules, but please don't abandon logic and common sense.

well said.

Who as right and who was wrong doesn't matter when you're dead.

Ive often seen that when cyclists are riding in a double line and they encounter a pothole or broken bottle, there are suddenly cyclists all over the lane trying to avoid smashing their new carbon clinchers or bursting their tyres. Cars don't see these as obstacles the way cyclists do, they just see a bunch of guys riding like sausages.  I do prefer the single line, execpt when the guy in front of me does not close the gap, I'll nip past him so that I do not lose the front bunch if the elastic breaks.

This always get me and I always mention it. Plenty people moaned about no cycle lanes etc. They are then put in place and no one uses them and every one has excuses of people running in the lanes to the lanes are dirty etc. Maybe if it was used then this wont be the case. I make use of any cycle lane when I ride on the road.

In other Cradle news: The past weekend cyclists had to dodge wannabe try-athletes running in the cycling lane.

Was this on purpose?

Share the road!

Pedestrians on the pavement

Cyclists in the gutter

Motorists on the road

With approx. 20,000 deaths every year on our roads maybe its time to get annoyed about dangerous driving, drunk driving, speeding, texting etc.
