New Road Wheels

I currently have Shimano RS20 wheels on my Scott CR1 Team. According to specification, they weigh 801g (F) and 1069g ®, thus 1870g total. I don't find them to be overly stiff, and I'm not a powerhouse rider, but I do get brake rub when I get up out of the saddle. I've been thinking about upgrading the wheels to something a bit better, around the R5000-mark, but then EvoBikes launched their Festive Sale, and now I'm wondering whether I should stretch my budget. So here are my other options, before getting to EvoBikes:

Mavic Aksium Elite @ R4199 (down from R4500) weighing 1735g

Mavic Ksyrium @ R7499 (down from R8500) weighing 1690g

or R3500 in the classifieds

Fulcrum Racing 3 @ R7999 (down from R8500) weighing 1555g

Fulcrum Racing 5 @ R4500 (down from R5500) weighing 1645g

Shimano Ultegra 6800 @ R6999 (down from R8550) weighing 1640g

or R2000 in the classifieds

Fulcrum Racing Quattro @ R5200 in the classifieds, weighing 1710g (R5995 new)

Shimano RS80 C24 @ R3000 in the classifieds, weighing 1521g

Now EvoBikes have gone and put the following on sale:

American Classic Victory 30 Tubeless @ R4295 (down from R4695 down from R6995) weighing 1592g

American Classic Argent Tubeless @ R6995 (down from R9995 down from R13995) weighing 1372g

That puts me in quite the pickle, as those Argent wheels seem like the bargain of the year.

It's quite obvious that the Argent wheels are the best bang for a buck in terms of weight saved (even though they are last years model), unless I opt for one of the second hand Shimano options. The Argent wheels are semi-aero and tubeless, which is quite a big attraction. But at that price, it would seem stupid not to grab them? In terms of new price, it's either of the AC options I think, but the second hand Shimano wheels are also enticing. Help!

(Also, don't go buy all of them before I get to make up my mind, please and thank you)

Or do I just send my current wheels for a good checkup and suck it up?

FWIW, i have the Fulcrum racing 3s (2-way, meaning i can go tubeless if I so desire, and i shall soon enough), and they are surprisingly robust given my mass,  roll very well, and generally been very reliable. Note: I'm not the original owner.

I don't particular care about the mass of the wheelset as i've got bigger things to worry about ;)

edit: thoughts on aero: . A deeper section does often complement a road bike's appearance. But do read the fine print as to which speed all that aero advantage kicks in.

My choice of those listed, either of the Shimano's. (assuming they in good nick)

A set of good wheels will make the world of difference to the bike.

Those Ultegra wheels are very tempting, perhaps I should go have a look, the seller is also in Pretoria.

Yeah, I'm also not after a light, but bendable wheel, but all the reviews I've read say that the Argents are very strong wheels. And looking at overseas prices...

(Didn't know you do the roadie thing???)

Also, I'm fortunate enough to weigh a few kilos more than Louis Meintjes, so that's not the big worry for me ;)

American Classic Victory 30 Tubeless and they'll give you a little aero advantage, bombproof.

Yeah I think buying new, these are at the top of my list, but I'm trying to convince myself that spending the extra money is worth it :( Maybe when I'm stronger and faster...

For that price you're not going to get the lightest wheels so I would at least go for something with a profile of 35-38mm to give you some aero advantage.

I have Campagnolo Scirocco wheels and they are pretty similar to the AMC and also around 5k. Have a look at them, but i'll go with Amc Victory 30, saves you money and and that extra 3k can buy something else.

American Classic Sprint tubeless 1,396g at R6,750 would be my choice.

The deal you have found on Argent is outstanding. If you believed the RRP of 14k.

Unless getting a pair of Zipps 2nd hand for nothing I would buy new.

Whatever you do, do get tubeless. I saved another 100g a wheel on tyre and tube on my tandem. Although admittedly they did have those awful gator hide things as standard.

The lack of hassle is remarkable. And not having to carry a spare tube is the dog's bollocks.

I recently bought a set of AC Victory's for myself and a set of AC Argent's for my son.  The Argent's are a very good deal for the price and are a great set of wheels.  I was not very happy with the Victory's though as they were very flexy.  I took off the bladed spokes and rebuilt them with double butted spokes and I like them a lot more now.  Defo stiffer and weigh 50g less. :)

Summit cycles, Midrand has a set of Sprint 350's with 700 k's for R 4700

You definitely can't go wrong with this. And you will get great back up from AB.

I'm even more confused than I was before starting this thread

I was hoping to misuse the credit card for this purchase, but SARS has been kind and I might need to delve into that and give Summit a call. Thanks for the headsup!

I'm disappointed to hear of people complaining about flex on the AC Victory 30 wheels :( I was really leaning towards them.
