My crankshaft broke while standing to climb a hill at speed after just coming down another causing me to fall badly injure myself. The bike shops I spoke to had never heard of a crankshaft breaking before and I could find nothing on the Internet. Has this happening to anyone else?

Wow that is impressive. There is a little surface rust inside the shaft but the break looks rust free so doubt that had anything to do with it.

Its a scary thought when they thing you are standing on gives way at speed.

I wanted to offer the customary hello and welcome to theHub speech that we give ALL newcomers, but I see your account is 4 years old.

Just so I get the timeline right, you create an account, wait four years and then make two posts in a week. Slow times at the office? :D

On a more serious note, yes. I break my crankarms during every FTP test. We gonna make it.

I have seen this only twice in about 12 years, so yes it can and does happen...I am not sure how old your cranks are and I stand to be corrected when I say the warranty period on Shimano components is 1 year to the original owner...

If you are the original owner and can prove so then I would submit a claim and see what happens...but don't be upset if it is not approved based on timelines as those cranks are at least 2 years old...

Where you listening to "i've got that power" from Biebs when this happened

Give Cool Heat the distributor a call. Maybe they will warranty it

It looks like the fracture started at the point where the splines enter the left crank.

My guess is serious overtightening of the crank bolts, that caused a small crack over time, leading to the eventual fracture.

Would be interesting to measure the torque on those bolts still in the left crankarm.

There are signs of corrosion inside the crank tube but the bearing/shaft interfaces look clean. It is normally the non-drive side BB seal that fails 1st so possibly some water got between the shaft and the BB bearing on that side and could have initiated corrosion leading to failure. I am also a little surprised that the bearing came out of the bb cup with the shaft attached - were they corroded together?
