Had to smile yesterday .....

We were doing a lap of Bloemendal and D'Aria.  Through the gate, back into Bloemendal, and UP that little hill .....

A rider on an e-bike comes past at SPEED.  This was clearly a case of his "euro-stykle-chair-lift".  He was polite in indicating his intent to come past, and greeted us as he shot post.  It was clear this gent was still getting a decent workout !

Maritz was taking strain after a couple of hills in succession .... and he says to me: "Die oom cheat"

Add to this my thoughts of the day .... saw a 9-year old drop his mom.  He had to wait every so often for her to catch up.  And I am finding myself having to work up a bit of a sweat early in the rides to keep up with Maritz ... it takes a few kilos and couple of hills for him to dial it back, and for me to then catch my breath ..... 2020 is going to be interesting as he gets even stronger, and more stamina .... and then has to wait for me to catch up .....  :whistling:    time to start saving up for an e-bike ...

Yesterday, on the way to work, I heard on the radio that the City of Cape Town has just given a bunch of their Table Mountain security officers e-bikes to patrol the mountain. As far as I can figure it is an initiative they rolled out to try make the tourist season safer. Chasing baddies on an e-bike.......I think is a legitimate reason for being on the mountain!

But when the baddies hear how much ebikes cost they will be chasing the security officers to steal the bikes.

French Government Introduces €30k Fine for eMTB Tuning

https://www.pinkbike.com/news/french-government-introduces-30k-fine-for-emtb-tuning.html

The French government has announced that rider who tune their ebikes above the legislated speeds can face a €30k fine. For eMTBs, that means that speeds must be kept at a 25km/h limit.

The law came in as Highway Code provision L317-1 was adjusted last week to include ebikes. On top of the hefty fine, the perpetrator will receive 3 points on their license, the vehicle will be confiscated until it has been returned to normal working order and they could even face a year in jail.

There are also new regulations for professionals working in the eMTB industry too. L317-5 covers manufacturers, importers and those who rent or sell ebikes and threatens punishment of €30,000 or 2 years in prison for anyone found to be breaking the EU limits.

eMTB tuning has become a hot issue in Europe recently after a man in London hit and killed a woman crossing the road on an ebike that was capable of going 30mph (48km/h) but was cleared of all charges. Industry associations in Spain and Germany have also called for stronger action to be taken on users of tuned ebikes.

Previously it was seen as pretty easy to tune an ebike with kits available for sale just a quick Google search away. However, Bosch have begun to take action and introduced an anti-tuning system to its 2020 models. Claus Fleischer, Bosch CEO told Bike.eu: "The new system developed by Bosch engineers is using a sensor to detect whether the e-bike’s drive has been tuned. In that case, the e-bike’s computer will turn in an emergency mode. An error code will show on the display indicating the manipulation and the electric support will be reduced.” If the error state is reached 3 times, riders will have to take their bike to a Bosch dealership to be diagnosed.

GCN Show mentioned that last month, ebike sales beat normal bike sales in Belgium for the first time ever, 51% to 49%.

I hope that they are selling the appropriate footwear for these bikes.

I also sincerely hope that they educate the riders of these new machines on how to lube their chains properly

eBike Flats shoes - what a wonderful idea. No expensive materials needed since the weight is not really so important. But fashionable as anything 'e' and can sold for a premium! Double the margin: done!

Added benefit: the target market would buy the same shoe in a different color 6 months later if the fashion laws dictated so...aha, ideas!

IMHO this judgment left the man off very lightly.

His fast cruising speed comes paired with nearly complete silence. The un-informed pedestrian may well assume the biker is much slower and as such it is safe to cross the road. An assumption that may well have cost her life.

I don't mind if people play and have fun. But man up and stand for the consequences of your actions if things go wrong. Sad story, in so many aspects.
