There is a difference between public liability insurance (required under the SASREA Act - Google that for more details). It is not the same as the other insurance referred to by Andy, that could cover loss of income and possibly allow for refunds.

There are various insurances that will cover the participant. I used to be involved on the committee for a few running races and we were often approached by insurers.

For us back then it wasn't really an issue as we only had 3-4000 participants and in running events weather is not that big of an issue, so we never took it, but we would always suggest runners who traveled take out some kind of insurance against the unforeseeable.

The CTCT is a very much bigger event obviously, and weather is an issue, but so is entry fees,.... no doubt there would be a moderate cost involved which would increase the entry fee, and, as thats usually where the prospective cyclist looks first, it may also discourage them from entering.

Its a double edged sword really, but perhaps for future events they could offer an umbrella cover as an added extra, (ie) Entry is R???.00 then if you require it, basic entry cost insurance is an Extra R??.00,....

You could also offer various tiers (ie) for visitors who travel far they could insure against travel and accommodation costs as well, local participants can just insure against entry fees etc.......... it would be a bit of extra paperwork I guess but then its out of the organizers hands and the participant will have recourse (or not, depending) if the event has to be cancelled for whatever reason.

With 35000 entrants this would interest a number of insurers I am sure, the history shows the risk is there but its small, so Yah, I am pretty sure many would be bidding for that contract.

As someone travelling from Gauteng, I would consider that additional travelling insurance.

Interestingly, CycleSure offered insurance for trip cancellation - as a result of certain incidents - a terrorist attack at the destination, and other at home related incidents.

I wonder if CycleSure would consider event cancellation like this last week, as an improvement to their existing cover.

I wonder how many Cyclesure members actually know about this cover?

interesting issue - maybe the CTT Trust feels it doesnt need insurance in the event of cancellation - they have their income already and 6 months in advance so theres no chance of losing it due to cancellation. what would the chances of a court case succeeding if someone sues CTT Trust for incompetence / negligence for not having the ins in place. in sure this would have already happened in the USA.

Interesting, its similar to a travel insurance, but I wasn't aware anyone offered it as part of the package, maybe they will offer something like event cancellation in the future, its a small step and I definitely see a market for it, certainly I would take it out as well.

Can you sue if the "no refund" -rule is explicitly covered in the T&C's?

That is if you felt like suing for R500

Surely life is too short. It's not as if they're a medical aid buying private jets with the proceeds or something. Flip me

Did anybody what the Super cycling last night? The telephone interview with D Ballairs - was rather …. - I wonder what his body language was like. He started with really down playing the protest and the shortened route in rather babbling and a soft tone of voice. By the end of the interview I recall him referring to it as a Riot in rather a firm tone of voice. If anybody has the interview on PVR please confirm that what I recall is correct.

Are you forgetting that DStv have Specialized (pun intended) in repeats - you can Catch Up on these repeats at least once a day before the next show.

Go to http://now.dstv.com/...21-7a85893f9088

and watch it as many times as you want. If you want.

Thanks for sharing this for me - yes at about 4:39 sec he refers to rioting - not even a protest.

So what the difference between protest (not peacefully - when bricks are in the road and destruction has taken place), Rioting and an act of terror - from an insurance definition?

Do we get automatic selection for the 40th CTCT 2018 that we were selected for this year 2017 ?

Or will we still have to be drawn again ?

If you registered and picked up your race pack you are in for next year by my understanding.
