Big dude? Friend of mine came down in first corner. Handlebar broke in the fall. Fortunately I was not riding (flu) and was able to take him to hospital. He was operated same night. Collarbone had a bad break. Funny thing - he called the ambulance services at the event when he was at his car and they did not want to transport him to hospital. Not sure why.

Anyone know what was the number that took part compared to previous years, because the field seemed smaller?

they had 1600 (98km) and 500 (48km) on 14-Mar, and were expecting close to double that quantity. I asked now for an update.

That's for the 98 route, total entries is 2432

2017 was 2713 for 98 and 674 for 48, total 3387, that's almost a decline of 1000 riders.

Riding to the start I saw many riders including large groups opting for training rides rather than enter for whatever reason.

No surprise - the entry fee for isn't justified for 2 and a half hours of riding.

We did exactly that - went for a training ride instead. I refuse to pay over R500 for an entry, together with a late entry fee for roads that can be ridden by anyone at anytime. 947 is much better value for a similar price, especially with full road closure.

Normally ASG is not that bad at organising races.......

Personally I think they slipped on this one.

Seeding was a glorious cockup.  Various unskilled riders in a bunch of around 200 at speeds of 50+ km/h

Fun

We waited over 30min at the finish for a medic to check out a crash victim.

Just thankful she did not have a heart attack or something super serious.

Riding around I saw 10 porta-loo for the thousands.....I can only assume Emperors' bathrooms were being well used......

R415 entry fee with only one venue for race number pickup.

I draw my number on a piece of paper with a black marker.  Had no issues in the VB bunch.

This number pickup thing is bull****.

After 9 Emperors Classics, I decided yesterday that I will not do this race again.  ASG killed it for me.

Just heard from my MD that someone he knew passed away after suffering a heart attack, having done the race yesterday - after driving home.

Condolences to his family and friends.

A club member of ours. Passed away at home. Was still in his cycling kit.

Just shows how it can happen to ANYONE. A healthy fit long term rider.

2 kids, both out of school in the last few years.

RIP.

The first three positions in BL taken up by “wheel suckers” - which I guess is part of alphabet group racing. The next three places, maybe 4 were part of the small group that kept the pace going.

Who was in front as we turned right just after Carnival? Pace was insane for a good 2 or 3 km before it calmed down again for a bit.

Myself plus 3 other club mates, 2 guys in Office Guru kit, another 2 (can’t remember the kit) plus one or two others.

The plan was to go hard after Carnival and again up to the right turn (outside Heidelberg).

Riding in VB, I saw you with your Picaso number... I still thought to myself, this guy is a legend! Boer maak 'n plan!   Good on you mate.

Nobody even checked numbers anyway.

I heard about this, this morning. Shockingly sad news, and such a great cyclist, biker, friend and a all round good guy. He will be dearly missed

couple of years back I did the short route with a mate of mine. We were not fit at all so sucked wheel behind a gent who was rather obviously assisting his lady friend. He was a rather strong rider, only reason we could stay with him was his lower pace for the lady.

Climbing the hill to the finish the group that had formed started to head passed him. My mate and I made comments that we should finish behind the gent as he pulled us the entire way, nobody seemed to care.

We let him and his lady friend finish ahead of us and then thanked them for pulling us.
