Warranty Frame Replacement Complication

Hubland,

Opinions please.

I had a 2014 Silverback Sola 1 MTB, discovered a crack in the frame recently, and Silverback have agreed to replace it (just the frame) under warranty. This is all very good.

The issue is that the 2017 Silverback Sola 1 frame has a through-axle configuration at the rear, which is now incompatible with my existing rear wheel. I've been told the wheel hub needs to be replaced. I know you get conversion kits but the bike shop has suggested that this is not possible in this case (for reasons beyond my limited understanding of bicycle anatomy). So it seems the only option is to replace the hub.

I'm in two minds about this. Is it fair that I now have to do this at my expense or should I be insisting that Silverback find a solution to this?

Silverback provides a warranty on the frame and not on the components, so I don't think they are under any obligation to assist with the hub issue.

You can approach them, and it would be really nice if they try to assist, but you don't really have a foot to stand on unfortunately.

I'm guessing you've got a 15mmQR hub currently, that won't be compatible(but it can work the other way round) round holes/square pegs.

take the hit and chip in for the new hub. the TA will be better, and you've got a new frame out the deal too.

Typically, most bike brands will replace the frame with a new replacement, then the incompatibility issues are for your cost. It is generally stated in the owner's manual/warranty policy.

Some brands - not all, will offer a suitable solution in terms of supplying a wheel/hub etc, IF the frame/bike is less than a stated age...normally 1 or 2 years. Again this may be stated in the warranty policy.

It is done this way to "protect" themselves from having to replace an almost complete bike as in some cases you may have very little that is transferable to the new frame. Think about if you have a bike for 5 years, in that time they may have changed the axle spec, fork spec, wheel size etc so your old parts will not fit at all, now they may have to replace your whole bike because of this...

Now remember that a global brand may have lets say 50 claims worldwide over a month, and if they have to give away 25 new bikes to cover warranty incompatibilities they may soon go bankrupt or the initial buying price of the bike would be astronomical to cover these potential costs.

Best suggestion is ask them if they would/could contribute a bit towards it, but keep in mind they are not necessarily obligated to do so.

There was a thread a while back about a guy that had his rear triangle of his dual sus replaced and they didn't have the same colour so he had to end up re spraying his frame so both parts matched. In his case, the frame design hadn't changed but obviously paint had and the supplier never had stock of the frame that was a few years old.

I guess at least you getting a new frame. Take what you can and maybe someone can swop hubs with you.

The frame is a definite upgrade so I would suggest to take the bit of pain and get the hub changed or even better get a new set of wheels and use this as your excuse!

what axle/hub have you got? and what axle/hub do you need?

Well I never changed the original hub, so looking at the stock hub that comes with the 2014 Sola 1, it looks like:

Shimano SLX Centerlock

And then looking at the specs of a fully built up 2017 Sola 1, it seems to have:

Shimano Deore FH-M618, Centre Lock Disc Mount, Adjustable Cup & Cone Angular Contact Bearings, 142 x 12mm

Paul, those shimano hubs are a bit meh anyway.

Do yourself a favour and shell out for a decent set of hubs and have them built by a good builder.

There are a few guys selling hubsets on here which are more than adequate.

Taking the hit now is worth it. Having rad hubs is awesome. I shelled out for some Pink Chris Kings and it is the best decision I ever made.... those things make me happy

But you would still have been happy if they were pink Shimano hubs, right?

I just replaced my wheels and I have a 142X12 Shimano SLX hub laced with Mavic rim. Hub is ok, might need a service, but if it gets you through to when you want a lekker set of wheels make me an offer.

I have to aggree with Jewbacca though, there is nothing like a new quality set of wheels.
