Brand loyalty - what would make you change?

Does Spez really have that much proprietary bits?

I recently built up a stumpie ht, with no proprietary parts. I know the brain in their forks/shocks is proprietary, but what else?

142+ axles

suspension linkage yoke

rear shocks

So, if, hypothetically, it was Jacob Zuma's company, funded by the Guptas and paid for by Rhino horn, you wouldn't care, as long as it was cheap and effective?

Dreaming up subjectively supported, hypothetical, ethical and emotive scenarios to be used in a forum like this, is not going to end well.

Where people draw their personal lines is about as personal and subjective as their believe choices: You will struggle to agree on almost anything.

Do we then apply the same selection criteria on where we buy food, cars, which social media platforms we use.

But to answer your question, do I take those criteria into account when making brand judgements, of course, everybody does. Just as a example, what Spez did to the guy in Durbanville, played a part in my decisions about them. Do I support Gupta, no, but do I pay my Eskom bill, yes...

This is how brand loyal I am:

BMC bike

Fox fork

Race Face bars

Thomson stem

Shimano brakes & pedals

SRAM shifters,grips,crankset,cassette, FD, RD

Selle Italia saddle

Easton seatpost

Spank wheels

Hope hubs

Vittoria front tyre

Maxxis rear tyre

Topeak mini pump

Ryder valves

I forget what my bottle cages are but they are plastic black carbon-look ones, could be Specialised

And this why I love bikes, you can mix and match anything you like. I bet those golf :eek:playing guys can't do this.

Can anyone top my list?

"Does it come in steel?"

I am proud to own some of my bikes, but 'brand loyalty' is a thing for the wealthy.

I will of course ride my Mercer with pride as David is a friend of mine but I can't afford another one!

If it makes me weak at the knees and is more desirable than Mila Jojovic in her elastic outfit in 5th element (BIG badaboom in my pants) the price point comes second, but obviously within reason.

I am a firm believer that a bike should make you want to ride it...

Interesting topic, I can see where you are going with this.

I must admit, there is certain brands that are inherently more "cool" than others. I’ve had a Nishiki, a Univega, a few Konas, a Giant, a GT, a few Ragleys and currently have a Surly and Rocky Mountain. My buying decisions for most of these bikes was based on value (I was lucky enough to get a few deals along the way) and this trend will probably continue in future. I cannot really warrant spending the same amount of money on a frame vs. a complete bike (or in some cases a set of carbon wheels). I don't really have a LBS so this does not really influence my buying decision.

I think it’s good that brands like YT is shaking up the market a bit, let’s hope the “cooler” brands also bring out better value bikes…

To answer your question, I would change brand if I need a new bike and I can get a really good deal on a well specced bike that is (hopefully) a bit futureproof. I might consider getting a complete bike with a really good frame that I'm able to upgrade as my finances improve.

I'm not "brand" loyal, I'm "service level" loyal. When the dealer network cannot support their product & my needs sufficiently then I move on.

So, The question was around brand loyalty and I was just (humorously hopefully) measuring your boundary i.r.o. loyalty or otherwise.

I have always sort of wondered about measuring companies on what they contribute and, more and more, I am starting to believe that, if we don't start to hold companies more to account for their behaviors, then we will continue the global downward spiral.

Before you, quite rightly, point out my failings in this area, I am by no means claiming the moral high ground, just raising a point. It is not easy to be a consumer in this day and age and maintain any type of high ground, but perhaps we should all try a bit.
