Yoh what a ride, definitely a feather in the cap with this one!

Rode with 4 other mates - all solo's doing the Full - the guys with the small boom box in the back pocket.  Hats off to anyone who rides this race alone, I don't think I would have made it through without the support of my "team".  We all had our dark moments at different stages and all managed to pull through.  Made it in just before the second sunset!

My training for this wouldn't be what you would call orthodox.  I committed to joining beginning of March, Argus being my first 100km+ ride in over a year, and only managing 4 other 100-110km rides after that.  3-4 power based training sessions a week really saved me!

IF there is a next, I'll certainly be aiming for better conditioning.

No - we have torn up the rule book and, for good measure, I have given up cycling.

We tried really hard this year not to win. Under trained, last minute preparations (we only got to Oudtshoorn at 15h15 on Friday, and handed in our boxes with minutes to spare), starting at the back of the start chute etc etc. We even sighed a massive sigh of relief when we saw the PowerBar guys - the same guys who convincingly beat us 5 years ago.

Competitive lawn bowls is my new sport.

No man, take up golf :whistling:

Well, it was great till after check point 1. Just as we left the stadium, the road was dark, and the next moment had stones thrown in our direction, because it was so dark, you cannot see where it was coming from. I got a stone against the helmet, and arm. From what i heard there were others who got off worse.

25km after CP1, the lovely soup decided to turn on me... well it turned in a bad way....

Had contemplated giving up, no power, no energy, dehydrated. Then the angel arrived... One of the on route medics...sat with me, sorted out the hydration, got some re hydrate and about 30min, later good to go. He followed me up to the next water point. Had something small to eat and off i went.

Met up with James/Johan/Collin and rode the rest of the way with the 3 of them.

The showers at CP2 were amazing... nothing like some fresh kit. Food was good.

After the lovely Rooiberg Pass climb/walk it was not plain sailing... the temp started to climb Gamrin registered around 39deg.

We hit CP3 with 34deg. delayed the departed for cooler weather.

At this point we made the call to just finish... no more chasing times.

We left CP3 in good spirits.... some amazing karoo views/sunsets.

Those last rolling hills were no joke! it just never ends...(never believe the route profile)

At the last water point, they served Roosterkoek with Boerewors! That just made the climbing worth it.

We powered home and entered Kleinplaas @ 21:30

27:30hrs later. We made it

From nearly pulling out at 85km to finishing was such a great feeling!!

BDO 2019 is going to require new balls, then?

The camel that almost broke my back - started with a serious lack of form after a 3 month lay off due to an injury in October, longest race CTCT and then Philidephia 75km that had me cramping and making me question my sanity for even being on the start line. NOT TO CLEVER I KNOW ???? but thanks to Team Brenner (2nd Mixed) I was on the start line and gave it a full go.

Made it to CP2 "just" and told the monsters to carry on without me, they said no and I decided to see if I would be able to keep up but 200m from CP 2 I got a massive cut on my rear wheel and had to stop. Told the other 2 to keep going and I will see them at the end, which they did????????

Anyway, fixed the wheel and started heading towards Rooiberg, got to it and monsterd up the hill (still don't know how), did the same with the down hill but then that irritating long flat road to Calitzdorp started and I was done, slow go no power sore a.. and arms and knees and hands and........ Barely made it to CP3 and there they are "team Brenner".

This gave me a bit of a moral boost just a pity not a leg boost. The Brenners went on their merry way and I had a good meal, some juice, put every thing I would not need for the last 80km's in my box and hit the raod.

I unfortunately fogot what this stage was like, I will never ever trust a route profile again, it was death on MTB by the road of death - those damm hills almost killed me. My back gave up completely and I could not even get off my bike at the waterpoints but decided to keep turning the pedals.

Made it all the way to the end in 21:40, crowled off my bike and headed straight to the medics with the help of my wife and they did what they could just to get me moving again.

Glad I started and finished this race but I must say "Race to do list tick" but it was one to far considering all the metal and damage in my back to do again.

Big up to Dryland for a once again excellent race and experience that I will boast about for years to come.

For those wondering what the last bit is really like in terms of profile ..........

Back home from #36One Challenge #4.

No comeback from a gradual compression loss and then ultimately a failed front shock after WP5 nearly 25km from CP2.

Nearly cried when they made it final for me and cut my number board off.

A DNF at 3am Saturday morning.   :( sucked!!

BUT!!!

Back next year! ;)

That's the spirit!

statistically speaking, that is the sport with highest rate of fatalities per competitor on earth. Darts, my son, play darts.
