I bought the Birzman cutters at about R200 and they work perfectly. Used them like twice only so not worth buying a very expensive pair imo.

Tape it, cut it and ream out.  Dremel, pliers, side cutters or whatever. Never had a problem with fraying of the cable.

Old school - solder also works properly.

Nee man, don't skimp on tools. Get the right tool for the job. And get a proper one. You don't need Park tools, a BBB, ravX or Ryder wil do the job, but please don't use side cutters or dremel.

Appears I need to make a video and post it here, on how to cut bicycle cables with a normal side cutter...hahaha.

Must be doing something differently, as mine never frays.

How well does it cut the cable housing though? Specifically the shifter housing

I got the Birzman cutters, they work tit. I guess its about how many bikes you tinker with in the end. I've cut plenty cables and housings and they're still sweet as. For the price, can't go wrong.

Buy one or two decent tools each month.  Soon enough you have a selection of proper tools.

I buy Crescent or Irwin pliers/side cutters and vice grips made in the USA. Cut 2 mm stainless steel cables with the side cutters all day long. Buy the best quality available, look after the tool and you will use it for the rest of your life. Yes sometimes a strand of wire comes out of place, a quick twist with the fingers and it's sorted, as long as the cutters cut and do not squash the cable.

Cheap Chinese tools will let you down eventually.

Looking for a cable AND housing cutter-actually not worried about the cables as much as the housing-cable are cut easily with combination plier/sidecutters

I reckon you planning on stealing copper cables.......................

I have a good cutter that was not pricey - can't remember where I got it.  Used it in the workshop on hundreds of cables and housings over the last few years and still going strong.  On gear housing you need to open up the inner lining with a sharp spoke or seal pick after cutting and brake housing may need to be touched up on a sander or grinder - not long enough to melt the inner though.  I never use the cutter on anything other than cables/housing.

When the time comes to replace it I will get another good one from a tool shop.  Experience has shown me that Chinese tools belong in China.
