I see this thread repeating itself over and over for the next few months. . . Every week we have some useful discussion about the race, some jokes about the wind, then someone who hasn't bothered to read the previous 25 pages of discussion proceeds to post his: "But won't the protestors just do it again???".

The truth is we won't and don't know until the day. I presume we will continue to speculate, and I presume I will probably get flamed again for posting this again, but I will keep posting it every few weeks as the general trend seems to be to hate on the Argus, and I feel like some positivity is needed in this thread.

It's a great race, hell I have only managed to do it once and I fell in love.

Agreed

I dont think they should get extra money because they blocked the road etc. There are many communities, many in a lot worse shape than them that benefit from the charities. The charities go through the effort to apply and show the benefit to their community etc. Why should they be overlooked because someone shouted louder?

100%. It would be a terrible example of positive reinforcement, but that's the non-delivery protest, or is it protest-delivery, way....

Good idea, but there should be some ground rules such as:

1. The amount donated should be coupled to the number of finishers. That will motivate the community that will benefit to not only support the event but to also persuade other communities to not interfere.

2. Any community that disrupts the event must be disqualified from benefitting in future.

Have you only posted 13 times since 2005????

I got to finish that one.

The benefit of being a "early" starter.

My son was doing his first at 10 years old so we were taking it easy with him.Stopped on Ou Kaapse with fokkol water and our house in Scarborough and our car in Green Point.

He finished it the next year though at 11 years in 6 hours 30.

The next time he tackled it was an Elite

+ 1 and a few zeros.

I have said it previously and I will say again…the general assumption that the CTCT management team will just let the social unrest issues around the Peninsula take its course in the months preceding the race is beyond me. As if they – in utter incompetence - have given up and will rely on the whim of the protesters on race day. Goodness….

Then again, almost every aspect of the CTCT 2017 is like honey in the Rooibos tea of the doomsayers and the pessimism from the usual naysayers is all but unexpected. Like many of them, I also lined up at the start this year only to return home with a spent credit card and zero miles on the bike for the day. And you know what – it did not change my opinion or sentiment of the race at all. If anything, it reminded me of the fact that we are not only cycling tourists but we are also involved South African citizens who live, holiday and ride in a very real world. A great lesson to learn when one is so used to Milo and poached eggs and carbon handlebars…

I, for one, will remain positive and I cannot wait to line up for the 2018 race at the new start with a fresh outlook in the pretties place on the planet.

And that's what part of what makes it awesome for me, it's just so beautiful. Hell, the only reason I hate Pure Savage's constant photos on Instagram is because I'm jealous that they get to ride that route all year round.

And the vibe. For someone whose first ever race was last year's Argus, bear in mind 4 week's after being told I have to ride, with no experience and having never ridden with clipless pedals before, it's the vibe that got me hooked. We all suffer the climbs together, we all freak out at the speeds we achieve downhill.

It's just leka.

Given all the comment on this event. Is it still worth training harder to try and achieve a certain time?

If one isn't training to win / line honors / the Nolan Hoffman's of the world, is it best to just go into the event with ones general (cycling) fitness? By putting more training hours in, training to say go 20 min faster on the enter course are you not setting yourself up for further disappointment should the event have last minute change. If the course gets shortened you will most likely make you target time anyway (bit of a hollow victory).

There are certain cyclist out there that have a goal of say going sub 3h30 or sub 3 and end up making quite few sacrifices to make the training time for that. Is it still worth it?

Now is the time to start think about this if you are one of those who have goals on time for this event, as training probably has already stated or will be starting shortly.

Are you competitive or not, I think most of us are.

Unless there's chili in the pre-race pasta...

Question is, would it be considered cheating if an abnormally high level of chilli was found in the winner's test result?

My view is that you still have to put yourself in a position to be still achieve that goal, it is like a golfer saying that I am not going to hit those extra balls on the driving range because the chances of getting a hole in one is too slim, or someone not buying a lottery ticket because the chances of winning anything is so small (even those 4 ball match price).

I train to be fit so I can enjoy the race and if I get a good group to join on the route, that I can stick with them and event do my bit at the front.

From our side we excited about the race, as it will be my second full race and excited about the vibe and what ever the weather brings (I am sure it will be cloudy with a 5km/h wind just to keep everything nice an cool, and an average temp of 22 degrees).

If you’re gonna base your training regime on any number of variables that have been part of the Tour for 40 years, rather than on your personal goals, this race is not for you.

In my humble opinion…
