I was very happy with Jeanni Seymour winning the woman's race but how impressive was Matt Trautmann winning the men's race with a record time of 04:09:18 - a year after spinal surgery!

Same, so happy for Matt - what a freak.

I've always felt races down here have been viewed as the easy wins for international athletes, so when locals (well Jeanni is quasi-local) take the top step I love it.

Just one question - with the self seed for the swim why would someone rate himself as a better swimmer than what he is? Guys rating them as sub 30min swimmers and or 30 - 40. But actually must be at the 50min +. Our normal times are about 30 - 32 min for 1900 swim. And we self seeded us accordingly , at the first bouy and along the back stretch it was shambles with guys doing breast stroke and stopping infront of you or swimming zig zag into you. And we did not push hard in the swim.

It was always going to be the case.

There are a few factors that could do it, times based on pool swimming, advice to go with a faster group and draft etc.

Or maybe they thought they were faster than what they were!

That drives me insane though, I hate disturbing my rhythm when swimming.

Exactly, me 2. I get my rhythm and get going and you catch up with a whole traffic jam and okes just stopping and sighting. And then going over swell and stopping. But anyway it is lekker to pass people gets the motivation up.

Guess the sooner you start the better. I think IM must put some measure in place aN base yr seeding on previous results. If u a newbie start at the back until u have a time.

It’s a difficult one

Even though it is explained in race briefing that your race starts only when you cross the timing mat, many seem to ignore this and think the race starts as soon as the first go off... so think they are loosing time just hanging around on the beach.  You also get the ones who think they are faster than they are ..... but is not uncommon a factor in other sports.  If you do any of the road running events, I can guarantee that you will have walkers at the front of the start and runners who start walking after the first couple of kms.  Even if the race has seeding batches with predicted finish times, they will still seed themselves towards the front and cause chaos!

What a day. The race, as predicted, was hard. Started the race with my friend and training partner. The mood was light hearted, and a little nervous. Got lots of goosebumps as they sent off the pros. Was a great way to start. My swim was faster than I planned. Got hit a few times, once pretty damn hard in the head. The guy must have had a sore hand for the rest of the day. Gladly I didn't have anyone swim over me, nor did I swim over anyone.

The cycle was the best part of the day. What an amazing route. I didn't battle anywhere, except for the last hill coming back in. I tried to take in everything. It rained quite a bit, and was a little nervous as I have never cycled in the rain, but it all went smoothly. I played a little game of how many pairs of glasses I could spot on the road. Lost count at 10. Lots of money lying right there. Surprised that people didn't stop when they dropped their glasses. My cycle time was over by 5 minutes, which was probably due to the hectic headwind we had coming back. Best Bike Split is an amazing tool. I loved the route coming back, and I tried to use my 1.81m frame to gain as much time as I could. Was a blast, and saw some new top speeds. There were kids playing alongside the highway from the rural areas begging for our empty water bottles. Not sure if it was a game, or they were looking to make money out of it somehow.

Wheels came off completely on the run. I was suffering from stitches in the right side of my stomach from T1, but it was intermittent, and went away after an hour on the bike. The stitch came back and developed into full on cramping in T2. Ran out and was slightly off pace on the first lap, but the pain was slowly getting worse. Did a walk / shuffle for a good portion of the run. Not sure what went wrong. I tried to stay hydrated on the run, drank only water and coke, but the cramps did not stop. I don't think the High 5 gels sit well with me. Running passed the red carpet after the first lap is a mind bender. I get that it's to maximize value for the spectators, but seeing the end, but being so far was a little perturbing. Saw (and heard) a guy running with slip slops. Not sure what that was, but suspect he forgot his running shoes?

The support and volunteers were amazing, and better than I expected. They really helped keep me going. Loved the support and cheering after Bunkers. One house set up a shower thing to run through.

Bought a new tri-suit, which I tested quickly beforehand. However, I didn't test it long enough to realize that the sun will penetrate the mesh. Got very interesting burn marks on my back. That was pretty funny, and a lesson learnt.

All in all, I loved it. I was a little disappointed with my time, but I completed it, which was the objective of my first half. Looking back, it was a big day: first 21km, most ascent, longest ride, first 70.3, fastest 1.9km swim and fastest 90km cycle. Lots of progress to be made, but feeling super motivated and looking forward to setting a big PB in Durban.

Well done to everyone on your amazing results. I have a renewed sense of respect for the sport and the super fast athletes out there.

You will learn a lot from your first! Weaknesses, strengths, what to work on to improve your time with specific training as well of nutrition.

Even us seasoned racers still work on improving things!

The first is just about finishing, well done and congrats EmJayZA!

Now that’s what I call a race report ????. Thanks. And again, well done!!

Great report, well done.

We all learn as we go along. Not even the pros know if it all. Adversity occurs As in life and you overcoming it if possible, the miracle is starting as the work has been done, the medal is just affirmation of the work. You will be a lot quicker in Durban esp on the bike, also practice getting out of wetsuit quicker, yr T1 time resemble my lengthy times in transition. EL is me of the toughest halves on the calendar so to quote Sinatra, if you can make it there you can make it anywhere.

I was following a whole bunch of ppl in the ironman tracker app, had about 10 an the app keeps you informed with whereabouts, anticipated times to completion and the like. Really really excellent info and well put together.

You will always get a few people like that, but even with them it is a much better system than the age group starts they had where you had guys varying abilities starting together.  There is a lot of reasons for guys stopping though, and its not always because they seeded themselves in a faster time slot. Its part of the race and something we have to deal with.  I had a guy swim into the side off me, thats how skew he was swimming, and when i corrected him he started cursing me. Fun and games

Wow! Amazing stuff, well done!

Wow, what a day! my 6:38 is a far cry form my PB 5:54 from 4 years ago, just shows you what the benefit was then of training with a coach!

i agree totally with the swim issue of self seeding. I seeded myself in the 30min to 40min pack, and finished with a 38min swim. The number of people that I swam into is ridiculous, felt like they were trading water.

how nice was the rain on the bike! And drafting...for 60km there was no way anybody could have had more then 6m between cyclists.

Unfortunately my run ended with some kind of bladder infection, pee-ing coke colouered. will have to go to the doc today.

All in all a great day, the first training week for IMSA2018 done and dusted!
