Ezelenduro for Noobs. Or: What Not to Do to Finish Ezel

Sort of off topic, but the trolls have screwed the thread's gees anyway.

Just before the first Ezel Pieter Henning broke his bike, and no one wanted to rent a bike to him. Especially not the irideafrica boys. His #steiltekosduur tags and his rough riding style might have contributed to it. He ended up making like macguyver and fixing it.

This year the Kim Webb rocks up on an irideafrica rental.

But she worked as a marshal, offered to sacrifice her race and ride as a first aid first responder and rides a lot less like a Neanderthal.

So if you want to rent a bike, do it from someone who doesn't know that it it Ezel weekend, or be a valuable contributing member who rides like a fairy.

Ps: that same Pieter H blew the damper on his pike this weekend.

oh dear then i'm in trouble i also have no respect for a bike. Were there guys doing it on XC\Dual Suspension bikes? I've heard more than once that it is not reccommended & you will just end up blowing your shocks.  saw there were guys doing it on Hardtails though but assume they were runnning +130mm up front?

Isnt that why you okes wear flat shoes? To help with all the walking?

Or is so that the driver of the shuttle vehicle has control over the clutch/brake when driving up and down the mountain?

Must say I have held my tongue on posting on this thread as I'm a bit in between all the opinions/views shared here. And man does everyone seem to have their hair up

Firstly to Myles, thanks for sharing, for writing - we need more writers, more varied views on things, and I must say you write pretty well. I enjoyed much of your report

Next time though, please just bloody finish what you started (all this angst on the hub is not good)  :P  And I'm not talking just on the race day, but in the prep, in the diet, in the getting fit part. This was your goal for the year, you've frankly been talking up a storm about it - and you dropped the ball any which way you look at it. I know your old mans ill health really hasn't helped this last month, but you were well behind in your prep long before that and I think you know that too.

Many of us have been pushing you along this year, trying to get you to follow through with your plans but you keep letting yourself down. I don't know for sure, and I don't like to speak for others, but I am pretty sure that is Vetties gripe, I have noted he has given you much support on your diet/fitness thread.

Time to walk the walk pal - enough of the talking. Look forward to the report on stage 5 next year and a slimmer fitter Myles wearing that lekker EselEnduro Donkey T-shirt with pride

Just vokken do it

PS: Where can I get a wicked Enduro HT for under R10k (asking for a friend)

Sien jou daar. My post-natal comeback begin die 12de.

Ek wou, het 'n appel te skil na my val daar , maar ek is gesnoeker deur 'n vriend se kind wat daai dag gedoop word.

100% on the nose, Andrew. My prep was deeply flawed, and I'm sure I touched on that as well. Whatever the reason for that was, I'll accept that and move on with more dedication to the cause. I needed to do more. I didn't. That's done. Can't do anything about that now. Can only control what I do from here on out.

Thanks for clearing up the mystery for those of us that weren't following the other threads.

Was wondering if there was some history there causing the outrage as opposed to the actual race report.

Guess this is what happens when threads & egos gets mixed up.

That's exactly it.

As Andrew said, I think a few hubbers have become annoyed in that on both this thread and the 'Pursuit of Fit' thread, Myles has talked a big game, but hasn't been able to back that up with any real results.

Myles, I feel like a douche pointing it out, but think it fair play as you've put yourself out there by creating these threads. We're nearing the end of October and you didn't finish Ezel and still miles off of your target weight.

Silence the naysayers with results, not threads about 'it's back to square one', why you didn't finish, etc.

Two things stick out for me:

1.

This idea that only finishes can write ride reports. The notion that Mrs Slowbee would (should) not have been allowed to write a ride report on S2C if she did not finish amounts to a pile of manure. Ride reports are all about experiences and inspiring others to give it a go, or help other give it a go.

2.

I have not really looked into this thread. But sometimes hubbers really confuse me. You will report the living daylights out of trivial stuff on other threads, but when posts really could do with moderating non of you bother.

As someone said, twilight stuff!

Ja but Mrs Slowbee is hotter than Myles.

She can do just what she wants in my book!

Noted. This wasn't supposed to be one of those threads, though. Just a description of my experience as an average joe.

Hey Myles (and anyone else that have ridden this enduro) tell me a bit about bike requirements...in your opinion? I remember reading something on another forum where the overwhelming opinion was that for most SA riding 120mm travel was more than enough? I have a 2015 Camber so not as much travel as the newer models (110mm).

Not just on travel of course but also for example on wheels, dropper post requirements, helmet requirements....etc. (Bearing in mind I am heavy...110kg...I just want a general opinion)

Considering and upgrade cos just like you I only climb to get to come down again (750m climbing by the way is quite a bit in my opinion) so a means to an end. Don't consider myself a good enduro rider or rider but really want to get involved as I enjoy that type of riding more than cross country type riding

Myles, you want a little inspiration - put that Esel shirt on your side table so it's in open sight in your daily routine. Let it remind you every day that you fell short and that you need to put in the hard yards, be it in the gym, on the bike or in the kitchen - to earn the right to wear that shirt.

I did it with my 2013 Comrades shirt (I ran an 11:75 having naively started running just 5 months prior). Like you, I wasn't up to the task at hand, but I went back the next year and I got my medal. And man it felt sweet to put on that race shirt after a year of torment (even though it's the ugliest Comrades shirt I own)

Own the path, make it happen  ;)

Through all the #training4ezel posts I found much amusement in poking fun at how much you were gonna ***. And *** you did. I would have paid money just to see that.

Admittedly though, all my amusement at your expense comes from my own insecurity.

I never entered because it would have been the biggest ride I ever attempted and I could not see myself finishing it. Especially after everything I've heard. So I chickened out. At least you had the balls to enter. Despite being ill prepared. Amidst the personal *** you going through as well.

You took the gamble and I respect that.

I am not sure my XC steed with 120mm travel will be up to the task. Bar actual technical abilities on my side, my biggest struggle now riding rocky stuff is pedal and BB strikes. How do you get past that given that you sometimes have to pedal and not just free over the rocks?
