milky4130 Posted October 17, 2017 Posted October 17, 2017 Brilliant write up Myles. Definitely the type of advise I look for when doing events for the first time. So somewhere in this thread it was mentioned about hiring an Enduro bike for the day?
Thor Buttox Posted October 17, 2017 Posted October 17, 2017 I'm really glad people are calling out Myles for his opinions. Wanting to share an experience of total abject failure, pain and misery, incompetence, unfitness and physical incapability should never be done with humility and a sense of joy, and should only ever be done in a movie like '127 hours'. Too bad too, that, his experiences are facts and not opinions, even when seen through the filter of such depredation. So sorry, Myles, I don't see you as a hero. You just seem like an Average Joe* who happens to write an entertaining story. Because if I looked at you as just an incomplete descending con, I may become a bit condescending, and clearly others have already completed that event and have reported on it. *- perhaps I am dyslexic, but I am sure that was the point of your story
PhilipV Posted October 18, 2017 Posted October 18, 2017 Brilliant write up Myles. Definitely the type of advise I look for when doing events for the first time. So somewhere in this thread it was mentioned about hiring an Enduro bike for the day?Sort of off topic, but the trolls have screwed the thread's gees anyway. Just before the first Ezel Pieter Henning broke his bike, and no one wanted to rent a bike to him. Especially not the irideafrica boys. His #steiltekosduur tags and his rough riding style might have contributed to it. He ended up making like macguyver and fixing it. This year the Kim Webb rocks up on an irideafrica rental. But she worked as a marshal, offered to sacrifice her race and ride as a first aid first responder and rides a lot less like a Neanderthal. So if you want to rent a bike, do it from someone who doesn't know that it it Ezel weekend, or be a valuable contributing member who rides like a fairy. Ps: that same Pieter H blew the damper on his pike this weekend.
Sparky and the Warden Posted October 18, 2017 Posted October 18, 2017 Rad writing skills there Myles & you summed it up pretty good like. It was great seeing you all there this year at what IS totally the biggest, baddest, raddest race in the Province. Next year you WILL finish. I'm suffering from an ITB injury and it started showing face from liaison 4 so it was another painful Ezelenduro, but thank goodness we skipped last years double trouble hike a bike, right?Where's the vids dude??? (Whoooohoo! Love the gees!) Side note what hub do have on? Sounds like ten thousand rattle snakes
NicoBoshoff Posted October 18, 2017 Posted October 18, 2017 Hearing way too many stories of bikes being KO'ed. Don't think I can get myself to do this again. Last time was with my alu stumpy and my fork also gave up after the race.

Pieter is a very nice guy, but really mal. 4 years ago he went on a school cycle tour with us to Knysna and showed some young guns that thought they knew it all how to ride a bike.
DIPSLICK Posted October 18, 2017 Posted October 18, 2017 climbing is fairly decent. . whistler enduro has a lot more descending but they also use skilifts. . considering, not one pic stage reaaly has more than 2000m of climbingI know this thread is a minefield for asking questions, but I am REALLY trying to understand this, are you saying if "person x" biggest climb is 750m as a downhill rider that is decent?? Maybe I really dont understand the discipline (down hill) but all the hills ive gone down as a buffalo I had to work my ass off to get to the top to enjoy the downnow as a weekend warrior(at best) 750m was my 2 commute rides to and from work a few years ago. I understand the concept of distance and climbing, all I am saying Is clearly I misunderstood that those mad buggers going down hills should/could actually climb them please Duane/Vetseun dont like my post I am already receiving death threats for asking questions
Skubarra Posted October 18, 2017 Posted October 18, 2017 Sort of off topic, but the trolls have screwed the thread's gees anyway. This thread is so bizarre... Read Myles's race report again and still can't figure out what is so offending that 2 hubbers would throw away their names protesting it (and the crowd sending secret PM's & texts around moaning?? wtf?? Twilight Zone...)

Thor Buttox Posted October 18, 2017 Posted October 18, 2017 you know what they say "Opinions are like assholes. Everyone has one"It should be '... Like assholes. If things get ugly, just wipe them.' on this one.
Piston ZA Posted October 18, 2017 Posted October 18, 2017 I also really can't understand the grief Myles has got. F...ing bizarre. Maybe lets just ignore the trolls and stick to the original intention of this thread. Thanks for the write up Myles. I've been wanting to do an enduro event for a while now, and this has really got me more amped to give it a try ..... but definitely not Ezel, yet

They are certainly more accessible and definitely the place to go to give the format a try. Next one is 12nov at Simonsberg , and I really recommend that you enter it. They are lank fun.

Yes, 750m isn't a huge amount of climbing, but perhaps it might be for someone like Myles. At the end of the day, I think Myles was unprepared for the event, but still gave it a go and enjoyed himself. There is no reason he should be raked over the coals for making a write-up of his experience. Perhaps a better thread title would've been 'My Ezel Enduro Experience'.
Donovan Le Cok Posted October 18, 2017 Posted October 18, 2017 Thanks for the write up Myles. Some may have finished, but most wouldn't have the ability to draw a picture of the day with your words and pictures. Well done. Its a pity that every thread on this site descents into a puerile sewage fest these days... Basically why I don't post much here anymore.
