Recovery times for legs?

Serious question:

Which of these 3 (quality) training sessions demand the longest time to recover your legs, ready for the next (quality) session or B level race?

Run, bike ride, lower body weight training

My personal slower recovery is from lower body exercise using heavy weights . I can feel the effect the next day when training . I use a Trojan Meridian Gym machine not lose standing weights .

Interesting question and I'm sure you'll get lot's of different answers. In my experience a lot has to do with conditioning. I only run and ride so can't really comment on the weight training. I find that running requires far more recovery time than riding. Trail running especially due to the steep climbs and harsh descents.

I'm pretty sure though, that if I did three sets of squats I wouldn't be able to walk for three days. That's where conditioning comes in.

I think there is differences in the muscle groups that are worked harder or less during each of those.

I think that where you get bike fit or running fit etc.

if equally trained for each of the types of exercise they should all require the same amount of recovery. However in general I have personally found that I tend to focus on certain muscles more when using weights (typically the ones that don't get much focus during riding) and hence they need more recovery.

Running also requires me to recover more but that's because I don't run a lot due to the joint impact which I try avoid.

Suppose its upto you and what is your weakest fitness.

I can climb 1000m+ a day and grind it out on my MTB and the next day although I can feel I rode the previous day, no real effect on my legs.

A heavy CrossFit workout with squats, handstand pushups, weights etc... I can feel tender properly in the legs.

Running doesn't affect me.

a run is relative... some guys training runs are 40 km, which will hurt more than 100km cycle and any weight training... so really you need to be a lot more specific.

I run less than 10km

I do a leg session once a week which includes a 30min treadmill session which equates to 6km, then a combination of squats, lunges and 90kg leg presses.

It can take a week for the legs to recover after legs in the gym and week rides.

I know its a week as work has got the better of my training of late where I don't do anything..

OK, my personal experience is also that a mean weights session requires longer to recover, followed by run and then cycle. Of course we have to realise that those who post here are primarily cyclist and perhaps runners, and not weight lifters, so most of us lift weights infrequently, hence it requiring longer recovery.

For me, something like squats take longer to recover from than running. It also depends on har far the run is and on sea sand the effects are worse. There are things you can do to help recovery, like foam rolling and sometimes a light cycling session helps as well. Some say cold water baths help as well.

Echoing what pretty much everyone on here said, it really depends on your conditioning (also assuming most on here are mainly cyclists). That been said I still think a tough leg workout will cause the greatest amount of minor mucle strand tears (which is largely what accounts for the "stiff" feeling from a hard training session)
