Absolutely, its 947 season in the cradle and we can't stop these big novice groups from doing brand damage to the cycling community, but we can make sure that WE make extra efforts to thank motorists and make sure that WE don't ride like chops to help minimise said brand damage.

If all we do is make the the motorist think to themselves "well a least they aren't all knobs" by giving them a thank you wave for giving you room, or apologising when you have blocked them etc, then you have positively contributed, and thats cool!!

This was how I actually ended up joining the club - I was one of those group crashers.... but I'd already been schooled in proper group riding etiquette. But it's really hard to ride properly in a big group like that, if you come across a slower group or obstacle in the road without a front vehicle and a follow vehicle and radio communication between them and the group, it's really difficult to move out safely for the group. That's with everyone knowing what to expect and actually being willing to ride like that.

But maybe smaller groups would go a long way to improving the situation.

I think smaller groups are the only way forward but I suppose they stretch a club's resources, aren't as social etc. But they'd probably be safer in general.

Club resources should be linked to club revenue. As membership grows, so does revenue, thereby they can create more groups....

With the CycleLab club specifically, the problem will be the fact that groups are voluntarily formed on the morning....

Agreed on funding model.

Re voluntarily formed. So people pitch and join a group of a specific speed, irregardless of how many are already in the group?

Basically... they do try and encourage splits if it gets big, but the slower groups sometimes merge out on the road if there are more groups. Its not that the marshals catch each other, its that riders ride in groups above their capability and get dropped, and latch onto the next group as it comes past.

I'm really glad I don't like riding in big groups as training. Sounds like a lose-lose situation.....apart from the scenery that is.

Edit for brain-fart spelling!

So what about the groups of 30 that ride through Camps Bay on a Sunday morning? They take up whole lanes and motorists don't seem to mind (atleast they not hooting).

Those okes are most of the time, stuck behind a slow moving bus.

I dont know the individuals and I dont know how the OP would have engaged with the two other riders.

If it was a confrontation it would have definitely made it worse.

Maybe I live in a dream world where not every person is an asshole.

So that would be the likely outcome of dispensing safety advice on the road.

There is NO WAY I would be riding like that dude irrespective of the smart overtaking logic diagrams ( very clearly laid out by the way ).

This is SA !!! ,

Gti will collect you at 180, oke will be quoted in the paper saying " sorry to da family hey, I just looked down to pick up my beer, errr, coke, then next thing I knew there was an oke all over my car"

Think the saying is " as jy dom is ..... Etc"

it's like runners running with their back to the traffic. Sure they've got the right to be there, but are they seriously so thick or do they value their life so little?

Maybe they are cyclists who took up running and just doing what they would if they were riding their bikes......

no diagram trumps the inevitable when steel crushes into bone and flesh .....

Bikers say "ride to stay alive".

As a cyclist I cycle to stay alive .....
