I had the feeling the turnout for the 50 was bad. 2 years ago there were 4 shuttle buses if i remember correctly, this year there were only 3 and only half the people pitched up for the shuttles. they made one full half the bikes on the other and the third never even left Malmesbury.

Maybe just me but I think R380 + R180 = R560 is a lot to pay to ride on public gravel roads I often train on.

In the current economic conditions you must have a great product to have a sell out crowd.

I see Darling Brew this weekend is again sold out, one of the few events who still manage this.

For my race, never again at this weight class. This was the worst ride of my life, was okay until the 2nd water point and then there was nothing left in the tank. Go check out the pics on FB, i'm the fat guy pushing his bike...

Link on FB to the photos pls

I rode with a buddy and we just used 2 cars, so saved on the shuttle. Looking at the results, you're right. Last year the 50 Miler had 367 participants and this year only 313.

This was my first 50 miler and found it very well organised and in the end quite tough, especially the last 5 km! (it didn't help that the 100 Mile winner powered past us on that last brutal climb through the farm field near the end!). People are damn fast on gravel, but am very happy with my middle of the pack time: 4:21 for my first distance over 80km on a MTB.

I'll be back next year

Oh snap - I was the 3rd wheel over you, badly bruised legs, 2 non repairable rims and a nasty roasty knee but it's all good, ribs luckily not broken but very eina today, these things happen. Glad you are okay!

Eina! that sounds very nasty. Best of luck with getting back on the bike again. Today I can sort of sit on my left bum cheek again, still badly bruised. Bike shop called earlier and said the rear rim if cracked, but still I feel my outcome from all of this very good considering what went down (pun intended).

If you guys enjoyed this ride then be sure to try out the Cederberg 100 miler. They have changed the route and the start and end will now be in Clanwilliam.

Judging from the 100miler guys flying past me on the way to finishing my 50miler, it looked like gravel bikes took the 100miler 1,2 and 3. Is this correct?

I for one would not trust my.bike handling skills to handle the one descent after the big climb up to the radio mast. Sketchy!
