Has Garmin lost its edge?

Then go and buy a Suunto?

Garmin obviously don't even have to offer you a discount on a replacement, they could have just told you that you are out of luck and need to replace it at full value.

While you are worried about it failing after the 90 days warranty again, there is probably a good chance it may last you for another 5 years. Depends on a lot of things, no two electronic devices are exactly the same.

Garmin has a list of 'warranty problems', if your problem is on the list its quick replacement. If not on the list, understandably they may want to look into it.

I had my Edge 810 replaced in December - problem: non-responsive screen. I now have an 820

My order was placed with Malcolm on 11 December at Navworld.

I'm yet to receive my new Garmin

Op sorry to hear you had such bad luck with the unit - sh@t happens.

you basically have 3 options -

1. Tell Garmin to jump in the lake, write off the R6,500 paid initially and invest in another brand

2. Accept the R 2,000 replacement offer, get a new unit and run it - if that then also fails in 13 months time, I am sure you have a strong case to present to Garmin as to what/how.why

3. Discuss alternatives with Garmin - sure the 735 is a good unit, but if you feel you cannot accept the risk of another unit dying on you, what alternatives do they have - maybe they can accommodate you with an upgrade for R 3,000? Who knows if you don't ask

If you take the emotional "loss" out of the equation - Garmin are more than fair in offering you such a discount for an out of warranty device.

Please let us know what options Garmin propose and the final outcome.

All of the best.

That was then.

They have become a little more sticky now.

I've been waiting for a replacement unit for over a month now, and I'm doubtful anyone from Navworld is going to get back to me anytime soon

Urggghh

I hear ya

Finally some sense.

Haha, taken out of context but sure. If it meets your needs and your wallet and you are fine with having to explain to everyone what the product is(as most people seem to only know Garmin and at a stretch Polar), then that 5 year guarantee is well worth it.

We have so many options, so if you are unhappy, find an alternative.

Just as another comparison

The polar V800 multi sport watch comes with a 24 month warranty.... not that I have ever had to use it in the last 3.5 years ????

I am sure that on some aspect different products are better than others. But you need to consider what’s important to you when making the decision.

You obviously went through some decision matrix to arrive at the conclusion you wanted a Sunto. Other go through a similar decision matrix, probably with different parameters and weighting, then arrive at a different conclusion.

You however cannot apply a blanket statement like that to all GPS devices, across all disciplines across all peoples needs, that does not make sense ????

If the unit is out of warranty, you should take the new unit for R2000 and run. No other brand would do that. That is why I only use Garmin devices for training.

Sjoe first time I have heard of someone complain about the Garmin warranty. OP, when you say "has garmin lost it's edge", are you implying that the warranty was different before? AFAIK their replacement deal has been the same for a while. I am onto my 3rd edge now and only paid full price for the 1st one. Sure, each one lasted a lot longer than your watch did and I guess you have reason to be unhappy about that but go buy another brand and see if they willing to offer a replacement at a reduced price. Both my wife and I had screen problems with our vivofits shortly after getting them and navworld had no issues replacing them but they were both less than a year old(and the guy at navworld also told me that they had replaced a few with the same issue) . Unfortunately electronic goods fail, and in today's world they could last a month or they could last 5 years. Luck of the draw I guess.

Would I be upset if my edge lasted 14 months? YES!!! but I wouldn't be upset if Garmin said sorry its out of warranty but here's a new unit for much less. If the next unit also lasted only 14 months then I would start looking around at other brands.

To the OP, here's my suggestion:

Pay the R2k and get a new 735.

Don't even open the box.

List it in the classifies for R5k (and state that it's only got a 3 month warranty)

Then go purchase a different brand and hope that brand lasts many, many years because if that device dies the month after the warranty expires don't expect such a reasonable offer from that brand.

IMO Garmin still have the best backup service in the industry.

Some things are changing between Navworld and Garmin but once everything settles down we'll know the new process and life will go on.

Actually I bought it because it was on special and it met all my demands. But yes, everyone buying any expensive kit needs to do some research.

wow some hard opinions here...

Manufacturing companies take the piss out of us with inadequate warrantee terms.  If i buy a watch for north of R5k (which I have also done), I expect many years of good service.  I anticipate and accept that the battery life might dim down with time and that the plastic strap might crack or break due to exposure to the elements, but for the screen to stop working if I didn't do anything wrong from my side...?  not so much, so I'm with the OP on this one.

I work in the forensic engineering business, meaning that I spend my days analyzing failed equipment in order to find the true cause of failure (i.e. who's to blame) when expensive mining equipment breaks down.  Manufacturers only give say 1 year or 5000 operating hour warrantee terms, but in the mining world the budgets typically allow for equipment replacements at 3 - 5 years or >15000 operating hours, so we simply cannot afford to abide by traditional warrantee terms.  I can tell you first hand that MANY of the failures experienced are due to quality or workmanship problems on the part of the manufacturer, so no reason to believe it's different in the world of electronic tech.  Garmin should at least have a repair option, for most of us R2k is still a lot of money, even if it is only 30% of a new unit.

I imagine 2k is the repair option. Some manufacturers will charge an out of warranty fee for replacement, usually with a service part, hence the 3 months warranty. Your unit then goes back to factory, gets refurbished and comes back as a service part for someone else.

My point is, if Garmin was so good and they last for many years without fail, then surely if just one item goes faulty after 13 months then this must be a very exceptional case, and if so, Garmin should have done a bit of PR and accommodated the OP and replaced it at no charge. They would have lost out on a small amount of money and gained a customer for life, and would not have got a negative review of their product in an online forum, potentially for the whole world to read about.

However, if the quality of their products is not that good, then they will have to stick hard and fast to their warranty otherwise it will get expensive. So did the OP get a dud and Garmin are just being hard assed about it, or are their products not that good? We will never know unless we have people like the OP putting it out on the internet so that we can get a feel of what we might be in for when purchasing their product.
