Has Garmin lost its edge?

Warranty is a warranty is a warranty, so GARMIN is 100% correct.

If I was the OP I would definitely feel bitter about the product and the brand.

I dont think any of us buy anything with the idea that its only supposed to work for only the warranty period.

I had a Garmin 800, buttons gave issues last year and I upgrade to a 820 for R2k or something.

Havent had any issues and very happy with Garmin and the product.

If I was the OP though...I dont think I would go for a Garmin again.

Similar to me with the 810 to 820. Was very happy with Garmins offer!!

What would happen if it was say Makro and your fancy Samsung 52 inch TV packed up one month out of warranty?

I'm sure they would say sorry for you. Buy a new one at full retail??

Good morning Hubbers,

Sorry for being quiet over the past few days!

I have followed the discussion on the forum with close interest and truly appreciate the effort and level of insight which each of you have put into your responses.

I also appreciate and understand the arguments from both sides. This clearly is a simple issue on the face of it, that is actually quite complex when you get into the discussion a bit further. Each post raises a good point, and I agree with elements of the arguments from both sides.

As an update:

Based largely on the discussion and views on this post (thank you), I decided to accept the R2,000 repair quotation and went to Garmin yesterday, paid and am expecting to receive the replacement unit today.

A few hours after having paid, Garmin reached out to me to tell me that they had discussed my issue further and, in light of the context surrounding the issue and the unit being so close to within warranty, they have decided to replace it under warranty. They have committed to refund me what I paid yesterday in the coming days.

I must say, this wasn’t at all what I expected at the start of the day yesterday but was very well received and extremely appreciated.

Starting to understand why some of your refer to Bike Hub as “Garminland”. That is impressive.

Thanks again all, have an awesome week!

That's good. I wonder if the negative publicity on the Hub had anything to do with their decision.

Im sure that there are one or two guys from Garmin that are Hubbers and would have read this thread.

Won't somebody please do us all a favour and go chat to a lawyer regarding taking Garmin on with regards to the CPA in this case? I for one would be very interested to hear if any lawyer would think you have the slightest chance of success.

Nobody contests that it is a bad reflection on a brand and product that the unit failed in month 13. But you cannot demand a new unit from them because of this.

I put it to you that the only reason the money was refunded was because Gerrie Nel was about to be consulted.

Awesome, nothing like a healthy discussion on a public forum to effect a change of attitude.

Kudos to Garmin for coming to the party and changing negative opinions to positive ones with a bit of customer PR

I am not sure that our discussion here affected the change. Garmin seem to do these things all by themselves.

The the value of the Garmin branch has just increased.

A few more hubbers will be changing to Garmin soon.

With service like this it's no wonder that Garmin are the industry leaders (in SA at least) and the other brands battle to compete.

A nice to end the thread.
