I don't really now how to explain this, but Bottelary feels more natural.  Longer trails/roads. Where I come from, we ride farm roads and not trails.  I am used to farm roads, so I feel more at home there.

Tyberberg feels more like a bike park, which is enjoyably, up to a point.

Remember, it's personal preference.

What I do prefer for Bottelary over Tygerberg is that my day pass allows me full access. Tygerberg system is a day pass per farm only.

Those trails are fun. You get some proper distance and elevation in when riding there, admittedly it's more a XC type environment, but there is nothing wrong with that. The mix of farm roads and jeep track and single track make it an enjoyable day out and as @BuffsVintageBikes says, that breakfast comes well earned.

As many of us will agree to,  Conties probably carries the whole of the network on its back at this stage imo. If it were to go away for whatever reason, there wont be much left at this point in time for intermediate riders.
The rest are all a bit tired (by their own admission too, trails are admittedly old) and it is becoming harder and harder to justify the membership fee and yearly increase compared to what you get for not much more on the winelands board.  I find myself riding stellenbosch side a lot more these days for that reason alone.

But back to Conties. Something for everyone there and it promotes progression. Theres a reason why its always busy too. My only wish for Conties would be another elevator up to Rhino 1, Revised so it wasn't such a slog to get up there. Would love to do those more than once on a day.

Bloemendal upper - ‘Daler is a nice trail, one of my fav, but again, unless you are on an e-bike…its unfeasible doing it more than once . Bloemendal lower is only good for a beer after a ride imo. The new Veer factor bits over the rock roll, over the gaps are OK for some superficial fun but thats about it.

Same. I have been riding away from the local trails more this year than being local, to the point I'm debating the merit in even acquiring a new board. I don't see the value proposition anymore. I pay my day pass at either Hoogies or Conties, and that's it. I still leave happy.

I must confess, I got lost twice.

And here I wanted to go give it a try ... 😋

I live closer to Bottelary than Tygerberg.  My neighbour rides Bottelary often.

When I started out a primary decider was a venue that catered for the family ... initially Meerendal, then Bloemendal.  Those reasons are less of a factor now ..

Still enjoy Tygerberg trails.  Mostly easy miles, and a few bits if you want to play a bit.  Adding the roughly 20km to and from the trails it is a nice outing.

Coffee at Bloemies being part and parcel of the outing.

This is my pet hate of Tygerberg, and the big reason I never invite friends from outside the area to ride Tygerberg with me. Although as I understand this is more driven by the property owners than the club, and we have access to the trails thanks to their goodwill so I just zip it and mumble to myself.

If I want to ride both Conties and Hoogies on the same day then that means two day passes - with no traverse between them other than the tar road - and that puts me in a space where I can justify just as well going to ride elsewhere like Stellenbosch or Tokai side. Inevitably meh trails lose out to more exotic lines elsewhere.

disclaimer - 'meh' because more of the same old same old gets boring after a time. The trails themselves (Hoogies / Conters) aren't meh - the rest on the other hand . . .

Wotja mean? Yes, you have to buy two day passes but the traverse is the Anna Beulah corridor, which is the only corridor open to day permit holders.

Now that is a welcome bit of news. Dunno how I missed it, but you learn something new every day.

Unfortunately many of the members missed this info too, so you may still get some dirty looks or barked at for not having a board when you're on the AB corridor.

Those kind of people should just stop. Heard it has even happened to the Starkes, on their own farm before….

imagine riding around on your own trails, that you built and maintain, and some ex golfer asks you where your club board is haha. Must be hard not to go fetch the Rottweilers and escort said person off the farm.

I stand under correction, but is there not a board up that says this route is strictly members only?

I was riding up to the mast climb from Supertubes, and by the tree just before the big ascent starts a guy and his girlfriend were sitting on the trail fiddling with one of the bikes. Silly me rides up to them and asks them if they need help. At that stage the big guy stands up and asks me for my day pass. He never said anything else. For a split second I was starting to drool at the thought, and then decided he wasn't worth it, and duly presented my permit to be on the hallowed ground I was on.

But seriously, this totally aligns with how these ‘old boys’ operate at golfbat clubs  too…checking everything from shoe soles to the silk content in your salmon shirt, to the trim level of your BMW -  before allowing you in.

no BMW? Sorry peasant, no entry.🤣

I play a lot of golf and I don't see this at most places. Even the super larny places like Steenberg, Pearl Valley etc are pretty chilled as long as you're dressed vaguely appropriately and aren't hooning around like a loon.

I feel WAY more judged at a trail run or bike ride.
