It could also have been an alien like in MIB.

You shouldn't assume it was a tourist.

Do we always need to nit pick each others words? Rather try and understand what the others person is saying instead of trying to argue for the sake of it.

SA drivers generally have a sucky attitude towards cyclists, definitely worse than the general attitude that drivers have towards to cyclists in the countries where our tourists come from.

Every year on the Saturday before Argus we do a short ride up to top of chappies and back home. It gets busy up at the view point and there are a mixtures of foreign tourists and local tourists and the foreigners are always so interested in all the bikes and ask questions and obviously a lot of them have been informed of the race so they ask about the race. A lot of the locals and local tourists just sit there or drive passed with a huffy look on their faces. So much flipping tension, jeez they must just chill a bit.

Killing time on youtube the other day I watched a bike messenger video and what struck me about the way those guys ride in an urban area is to be completely maverick - they don't ring a bell or shout to warn people - they ride like they are in a video game that's throwing obstacles at them and they just have to deal with them.

They break every rule in the book in the process.

Have you ever watched the movie Premium Rush?

and ill bet you if it was tourists they wouldnt flee the scene of an accident :whistling:

Perhaps not but I suspect that around CT a tourist or Uber driver is quite likely to cause all kind of problems.

Tourists are perhaps thrown by the r/h drive car/road they are driving and are sight seeing while driving and not focused on the road. This morning I encountered just such a driver. He kept on putting  the wipers on instead of the indicator, despite having driven all the way from the airport in his hired Corolla. Ubers are notorious for stopping anywhere rather than pulling off to drop or collect a passenger.

On the road ride I mentioned previously, an EC registered car, possibly also a tourist or hire car narrowly missed me and then proceeded to stop in the worst possible place, blocking another cyclists path suddenly and creating a very dangerous situation on a busy road. The answer would have been to drive another 150m and pull off in a parking place at the side and then to do the U turn she was after.

Self driving cars should be compulsory for some humans :-)

I accept that leaving your door open into the road is a mistake. Carving through a small gap between that person and the open car door at speed is also a mistake. Based on the explanation given it sounds like there might have been enough warning to slow down or stop and avoid the accident altogether (I base that on there being enough time for the car to stop, the person to get out and to get away from the car with camera in hand) so the blame game is probably a bit excessive - especially the comment that we can only hope the woman was injured in the collision ("Bikebloke" should go and live somewhere else if that is how he thinks).

Just my opinion - an accident always sucks but in this case it appears to me to just be a whole combination of bad luck and bad decisions following a fairly simple mistake (leaving the door open).

We weren't there and don't have all the facts so maybe don't jump to conclusions (I know this is the hub but it is only Wednesday!).

Well done to whoever looked after Ian following his injuries though (I think that was actually the point of the opening post)!

Here is the cool thing, we dont need to be arm chair forensic CSI investigators.

We can just ask the OP, he WAS there, you weren't, so dont jump to conclusions.

Glad you're OK. It was a crazy day, and I swear the entire asylum had filled the roads. Seems like you collided with one of the inmates. How's she doing I wonder?

Heal up nicely and speedy recovery. Hope you're back on 2 wheels soon.

I had the misfortune of almost being swiped by a car early yesterday morning while going up Chappies - tried to stop the driver when we passed him at the Tollbooth and the just avoided us and sped.

Sorry to hear about your accident - rest up and hope you back on the bike soon!

Glad you survived what could have been a very bad accident.

A bike & rider hitting a woman at that speed must have caused her some damage!

we can only hope... :whistling:

I was thinking more along the lines of that she could have sustained serious enough internal injuries for them to have been fatal.

I hit the side of a van face-first in a local village last year while I was traveling at 12km/h. I needed 4 stitches and my face hurt for a good three week afterwards.

In this case the rider was "descending a section of Chappies at a rapid pace" (I don't know if that means he was going faster than is prudent for that specific descent or going faster than the speed limit) but if he hit anyone full-on whilst carrying that sort of speed it would have done them some damage.

Whether stopping was an option or not I wouldn't like to guess. Only Ian would know. Sometimes you only have a split second to make the call and whatever your choice, if it goes pear shaped there's little you can do about it than hang on and ride it out.

The woman made a seriously stupid mistake, no doubt about that, but I struggle to think she did it maliciously.

Fingers crossed for a full recovery Ian.

Morning drivers on Chappies are invariably commuters. They're not stopping. Sounds like you got away without much harm. Not much to be done I'm afraid... Other than counting your blessings.
