Not "scammer" per se but total time waster

There is a very real chance that we are being unfair towards the guy, but we need to establish the real condition of the bike before letting this go.

It is our responsibility to protect each other and especially the less experienced Hubbers by flushing out the Conmen/women within our ranks. Otherwise we will see another thread next week from a member who was done-in by this sort of seller who is less than forthcoming with the actual condition of the product for sale.

The ends do not justify the means, so we can definitely adjust our approach to flushing these guys out.

I still hold firm with my initial guess that this is a young guy who still needs to figure out how the world actually works instead of the world his Baby-Boom parents brought him up in: a protected bubble where you get what you want, even if you change your mind three times.

{Allot of generalization in this post, so let me spare you on commenting on that. There is a reason why Generalization is prevalent, because it is generally true. My last paragraph is a guess, not a statement, happy to concede if Christian turns out to be a 40-something year old Actuary, but I doubt it.}

I agree with the 'flushing out' but this has gone beyond that.

People are attacking this guy repeatedly. Most of them aren't even interested in the bike, just jumping on the band wagon, kicking the guy while he's down. School yard bully type hysteria.

He has done nothing wrong except be a bit of a dick. Like I said, there are plenty of guys selling over priced goods in less than desirable condition on bikehub.

Age, job title, how his parents bought him up aside, I challenge all of you to put yourselves in this guys shoes and picture how he imagines you, your upbringing and what type of people you are.

If he is a scammer, then that really sucks and he deserves abuse, but if he is just a dude who made a mistake, this kind of group bullying is not cool. Justifying it is also not cool.

I don't think this guy is going to be invited to anyones birthday party anytime soon, but we have had our fun. Walk away.

Hopefully the person who does spend 35k on a bike isn't a total NOOB and checks out the bike before buying it.

I don't like the tone this thread has picked up. This isn't Salem and someone doesn't HAVE to burn just because someone else was butthurt

Agreed on most points.

I reckon this has run its course now anyway. Not a lot to add anymore...I'll stop checking my mailbox for summons :-)

The issue here is if this dude IS actually trying to sell the bike, made a couple of mistakes and is just really bad with people.

This thread is pretty close to cyber bullying. I am not saying it's not hilarious, just that some people do make mistakes but due to some sort of flaw in their personality don't deal with it very well.

Whether they run away, lie, get aggressive etc the knee jerk reaction is their 'default setting' so quite difficult to change.

Sorry to be the Tuesday loser, but I do think lets lay off here. This sort of continual bashing, especially on a personal level can lead people to a very dark place.

Besides, there are plenty of guys on here selling things WAY above recommended asking price. Christian hasn't really ripped anyone off yet, so this Swen Lauer type bashing is probably a bit harsh.

Leave the guy. He has, in a rather stuttered way, admitted he was wrong and is willing to move on at the new price.

Call me a killjoy, but this isn't nice. Funny, but not nice

Well said. I thought actively hunting down his ads on other platforms and then trolling him was a step too far. One can claim that it is to protect other hubbers or bikers in general, but it really just came across as doing it for sport while being egged on by others. Besides, we don't know for sure that he is scamming anyone, to be honest he just seems bad at selling stuff.

He broke a contract, Eddy will elaborate.

He can take responsibility for himself, way too easy to blame circumstances for ones actions.

The fact that he has changed the price more than once, doesn't seem to allude to a "mistake".

As for the bandwagon stuff, jip I agree.

A little emotional but I have to agree with your sentiment - that's why I made a suggestion to him of how to fix it and won't post more on his ad after that.

The part that I really can't work out is that he posted the bike for sale at R53k in February (https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/293084-rocky-mountain-element-2018-950-carbon/) but now he says he doesn't know what it's worth and thought R25k was a fair price. At that stage he had 2 of them (based on the pic he used) but now says it is the only one in SA.

There is something fishy there but I genuinely don't know what it is so any prospective buyer just needs to be careful.

The one point this thread has raised for me is whether anyone who transacts over the classifieds ever checks or interrogates the age of the person they are dealing with? I know you can check someone's profile, but not everyone lists their birthday. Does one assume they are dealing with a full grown adult on all occasions or does it not really matter?

Given how this has all gone down and under the huge assumption the seller is young, would OP have approached the sale differently if it was known the seller has arguably limited life experience and thus his sales etiquette may not be top notch?

Each generation has different expectations and approaches, so mostly just wondering about this point

Thanks for that. I just logged on to write the same thing. This was funny and now it's turning into something else and TBH I would have thought the admins would have stepped win a while back eps since they got twitchy about the last seller firestorm last year.

Yeah the guy messed the OP about, sure he put up his prices but there is nothing new about that here, it seems a pretty douche thing but no one was ripped off, the OP has a bike, pitch forks have been lit, dumbass things have been said from the seller and hounding has taken place.

By the looks of it he owns the bike, he has the bike for sale and I think most people would have agreed that R25k was a on the low side. It's not like he's trying to sell a cracked frame and not refunding, he's said 'come and see it' and doesn't want to take it to a bike shop he doesn't know. It was a proper Friday thread and Monday was a rest day in the Giro so maybe it was a good past time.

Just a observation has anyone actually got to see the bike at all? Seems like he was willing to let people come and inspect but would be great to get a report on the condition.

My response to cristian classified add-

Just saw your add, looks brilliant. Just my size, I have been looking for a L / XL.

I am a petroleum engineer on a rig offshore, I won’t be able to come for an inspection due to the nature of my work, I would have love to call in person but our satellite server has been down which restrict our calls.

I will be paying you through PayPal, pleases get back to me with your PayPal details so I can proceed with the payment. I will also contact the courier agent who will come to pick it up and deliver it in my place.

If you don’t have a paypal account, it is very easy to set up, go to www.paypal.com and get it set up.

Just received a PM from cristian

Hi. In what country are you?

My email for paypal is $$$$$$$$$$@#####.com

Send me an email once payment has been done so I can confirm.

Thanks

Christian

In response,  I am just of the coast of Afghanistan !!!!

WTF, blackmail lawyers letter coming my way   WAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

So many replies suddenly to protecting the seller in question, but what about this? Is this false too then? Whether it is a yes or no, wheres the proof of either?

I don't see the issue. Much as I am no Christian fan the fact that he is willing to accept dodgy sounding cash for his bike doesn't mean anything at all.

If you want to sell something without comments, go to gumtree.

If you're going to be a bit of a chop, then you going to get stick for it.

I think that while this might have been a bit of fun, it clearly has taught a few lessons to people on how to conduct a sale (and yourself in general).

I'll stop attacking this oke.........because I'm lank *** scared of legal action like he was threatening. His lawyers have already been contacted. Sorry no , I can't do it...burn him!!

I'm all for a bit of flack and name calling. Hell, making fun of someone for being a knob is ok too.

I just think that too many assumptions are being made and too many people are burning him for this to be ok.

Patch, there are always repercussions for how you behave, I was just pointing out that this has run it's course and become ugly. The guy has already been burned and made to feel like a tjop.

To keep doing it for no ones benefit but our own is not cool.

I am by no means a bleeding heart lefty who wants everyone to love everyone. I am really a dick to pretty much everyone. But this sort of ganging up doesn't sit well with me.

But like all opinions on here, it is just that and subject to YOUR opinion on my opinion and the abuse that follows... sigh

How has Admin not jumped in here? Sorry to say, this good Christian fella has not behaved ethically, morally or even decently. Nothing he has done has shown any real desire to offload the bike - how many 'what is my bike worth' threads have there been that he could have used if he was serious. Being willing to accept other people's cash by PayPal or similar without appearing, at least, to have any will to compromise with a seller is at best disreputable. I don't agree with the overt harassment but feeling sympathy or even empathy for his behaviour is nonsense, unless he is a child or is in some other way deficient to enter a contract.

The boss is busy jumping on it.

Just sorting out a big trampoline to really go for a big one.

But in the mean time, lets let this die.
