My 2c. overall 2 well run events, few minor issues with MTB event, my number board showed B start group for 34k but at the event B group was for 60k start group so my board should have read D group and on track some confusion with directional markers, other than that enjoyed the fast flat route especially as the next day was the 110km event, craft beer at the end for an enjoyable ride. Road race spot on, easy entrance and exit for parking, plenty marshals and well stocked WP, new route with closure on the the R23 section minimizing the impact of shorter and longer rider merge, cramped the last 10k's but boerie roll washed down with more craft beer soon had me smiling again.

Where was the confusion on the route?

Worth the trip from Durban. No complaints whatsoever. A small improvement might be a Portaloo or six right next to the start. Otherwise a lekka day out. We are safely home in Durban.I will be back next year.

Pic 1 shows 2 routes, pic 2 it was not clear which direction to take. No biggie we took the right one.

Me thinks the same tjop that moved the sign last year moved it again this year - on the two tracks image. The correct route was the thin purple line.

 

The second image - are you saying there wasn't an arrow pointing right (to the airfield)?

Thanks for an awesome race as always! To the idoit on the eBike in AL well done you are the winner not competing against anyone as you said!

Lady in Pink she dropped us wholesale absolutely effortlees closed a 200 meter gap on other ladies in the blink of an eye. Finished in 3:20 something.

Only gripe is that I struggled to find the racetec chip collection. I stopped by the finishing tent and was told its up front before the race, but  by the time we were near the chute, I still couldn't see the tent, so very nearly missed my start! And yes, was my first road race ever so it could boil down to not knowing how it works differently to mtb.

I think the placement of the racetec chip collection is too close to the mats, because it seems like my chip was read before starting or something like that, I'm not sure. Both bike computer and strava recorded a 20 and 30 minute faster time than racetec, which makes no sense. Going to email racetec about my recorded time and see what they say.

 

The race was amazing - route was great, road was clean, marshalling was on point and extremely good, water points were plenty (thank goodness) and traffic flow in and out of the casino was good. It was a really fun day out with great riding, great people and a great vibe!

PS: while I do think its fine chucking banana peels into the veld, I refrained from doing so because it may upset some

Oh, and what was with the makeshift shoring and loitering going on on the  unnamed road joining the N3 and R550? It looks like land grab, but maybe someone knows for a fact?

My second time at the MTB race and first road bike race ... Can only say big ups to Frosty and the team from Germiston Wheelers, have absolutely no complaints!

 

Brilliant job guys, a special mention to the DOC guys manning the water points at the MTB race, they have some 'gees' and their support is top notch. And the same to the many, and their were frikkin hundreds of them, marshalls at the road race!

Ai PB, the sarcastic part of me wants to say that according to most of the hubbers they will only be used by the sick and infirm and not able bodied riders in the 'racing' groups and we should just suck it up .... But ja those people are everywhere I'm afraid

I agree that collecting a timing chip at the start isn’t ideal, but the same guys selling the chips are also the guys doing the timing.

This is the second time we’ve changed the start in more than a decade, so the 4-way intersection was a major challenge that we couldn’t afford to get wrong. It’s far busier than the old start, with traffic coming from all directions.

hmm, fair enough. Handling that intersection traffic as well as the race batches couldn't have been easy. I've sent racetec an email, but afterwards saw that start times are recorded per group, not per chip. A 32 minute disparity is still massive, so will wait to hear from them, as it could be my fault.

 

Thanks to Germiston Wheelers, Macsteel, Sun Carnival City, Frosty, all the volunteer marshalls and police that assisted on the day- they made it work silky smooth. I tried to greet them as often as possible, because grateful

Much more fun and makes it "different" from the "other" 50 events doing the same thing over and over again during the year.

Did the VB and the lady marshal was in full control of the race the whole way and directed traffic professionally.

Podium was done on time.  Excellent.

Not that I was there, I am way to slow for that but nice to see the front guys were considered in the planning.

 

Goody bag at the end.  Thank you.  Nice touch.

And the medals are quite special compared to other events.  Detailed.  

 

Race number pickups.  My only gripe.  9/10

After 12 completed events I want a permanent number and not drive around for a piece of paper.  

That said, pickup was like 10km from my work so not a mission as always.

 

Parking and getting in and out of the event was no problem.  10/10

 

Frosty, to you and the team, big thank you for the best organised race in Gauteng.

The only bad thing about this race was my form after 6 weeks of winter flu and a shattered collarbone on September. First ever AL start for me and managed to hang on 38km until getting dropped
