It would be inreresting to hear about the experiences of the girls and guys who escorted todays Comrades leaders. It's a long time to spend in the saddle without putting effort in to help relieve tired butts and muscles. Does this ever come up and if so, where can we read it

I have escorted a standard marathon twice and it needs a bit of concentration and need your wits about you. Those front boys fly.And they don't slow down on uphills or really speed up on downhills.

Its great tho

If you've done a Audax before this is not much more effort than that. I just want to be in the heat of the race, it must be electrifying.

I was JUST about to start a thread asking this. How do I apply? Or is it by invitation only?

Give me half a chance and I will be there! I'll pay for my own transport and accommodation.

Ditto. You and me Rookie. We'll wear BikeHub shirts to prove we were there.

The downhills will be the challenging bit, not uphills. Male winner finished in 5:26 (3:44 min/Km) which equates to 17.4km/h. That’s a good endurance ride, something which many weekend warriors seem to ignore. LSD FTW.

Guy at work did a few 2oceans as bike Marshall.

Gets tricky when you have to find 45-50yr old age leader .1st place man in the pack

I did it once at the Legends ultra (Bisho to East London)

It's tough. Those front runners do not slow down. 17-18kph up, down and flat.

Off topic question.

Are you related to Paula newby-fraser?

I accompanied Marko Mambo in this years Om Die Dam, which he won in 2:59. It was fun, but the uphills are the only challenge, as he did not slow down at all, and actually accelerated up the last hill to the finish where he was doing 18km/h! The local running club approached our Cycling club for assistance, so that's how I got involved.

I cycled the last 5kms or so with the second lady coming into Moses Mabida and its actually very stressful, you need to concentrate the whole time as there are so many randoms running around, including camera motorbikes etc...

But they absolutely fly. I also then cycled behind ladies 3 and 4 and it was interesting to see the Russian last make her move and then fly to take the 3rd Gold medal.

I would also love to accompany them over the whole race!!!

stupid question, but what kind of assistance do you offer these runners ? refreshments ?

My understanding is that it is a marshaling role. You keeps an eye on the contenders to ensure they don't take shortcuts or do something illegal.

Plus you can immediately notify emergency personnel if something goes wrong.
