I thought riding two abreast was illegal? Did we ever get clarification on that law?

Yes it is illegal. Cyclists are required to ride in single file except when overtaking another cyclists.

So, in this case, the cyclists are breaking the law

I have no time for arrogance. Don't care if its cyclists or motor vehicle drivers.

We have all this s#@t on the road LARGELY due to arrogance and bad attitude.

And the only penalty is death....?????

Amen. I said it on some other thread - the social contract has been broken in SA - it's every person for themselves now. Cyclist, motorist and Mr Joe Public.

Hoq do we get back to giving a shart about each other though?

Seems like cyclists are arrogant, sweaty (!), in debt (thanks to the bike) and should be paying licences...I suppose once we pay a licence then the mindset out there will change and we will all be openly embraced and be safe once again because luckily aside from cyclists there are no other dangers and hazzards out there on the road??!! (Has to be true seeing how we have one of the lowest road accident rates in the entire universe!)

I was riding around the UK for 3 weeks without one incident, without one moment of feeling in danger.

This morning, my first ride back in SA roads, and I had 4 near misses. Here’s the kicker, only one was a taxi doing what taxis do, the 3 others were middle aged guys in bakkies driving aggressively.

No social contract.

I have been saying for a very long time while cycling in SA that the taxi in general were the least of my problems.  The middle aged Wit man was my biggest problem.  Stupidity in a motorist can normally be predicted ... arrogance not.

'Boeliebakkie" mentality.

That's probably where the 43% No response comes from on the Netwerk poll on bicycles, not that I think that these guys actually read newspapers.

Ignorance is not always bliss.

It’s a mindset in ZA. Sad but true.

Not clear if you are on the car driver or cyclists side.

This is a problem in the east of Pretoria too.

Huge club groups on MTB's with beautiful dirt trail right next to the road but they need the Strava KOM's so they ride 2 or 3 abreast with zero regard for traffic.

Makes life hard for all cyclists.
