I think as long as you don't take the resale value into account, and you do the upgrades with the purpose of making our ride and life more enjoyable, then go for it. The worst thing you can do is not buy something because you won't be able to sell it for much.

 

You want to buy that frame with the integrated seatpost that has to be cut to your size? Buy it, if it limits your selling prospects down the line then so be it, you get to keep the bike then.

Not that easy when guys use their kids varsity money and think they'll only lose about 15% over 3-4 years....yes it happens.Many shops tell clients that bikes are an investment....yes it is but in your health.

Bad life choices are bad life choices, if you are using your child's college fund then there is a problem. I was referring to people that have the ability to buy the bike, but go into it looking at the resale value. Bike shops will obviously say anything to get the bike sold, as will most shops that need sales to ensure the business stays open. 

 

A bike is definitely not an investment in the traditional sense, it is a tool that get's you fit and healthy and can be used as an alternative means of transport between places.

I see more and more "financing" options on bikes also. Now that's a bad idea. If you can't buy it cash (or on your own credit card's budget options), rather go without it.

Main reason why I ride a hardtail and not a dual susser.  :whistling:

I'm sure you will catch flak for saying that, and so will I - but I agree 100%. There are very few things I (and this goes for me personally) think one should go into debt for - a bicycle (or any other toy) is not one if them.

Getting married soon and I refuse to even make debt for that!!!

even car is a bad idea if you take it too far. Don't buy more car than you can afford, even if you work out you can pay for if you finance/rent it long term in the end.

It's a short travel mtb with dropbars and now called a gravel suspension bike :whistling:

is it possible to "overmod" a bicycle(Road or Mtb)See a new "gadget" on show,must have it on the bike,whether practical or not! Is it always best to have the latest component fitted,surely it can become to expensive for some,will the bike still perform as to what it was designed for.Isn't better to become a better rider that having a better bike?

back to the original question, I remember during their heyday Raleigh SA were bringing in serious pimped bikes at damn good prices. ie A RM X.0 with XTR would be ~R30k a similar style Giant XTC with full XTR would be R40k+

 

People would buy the bike, sell the frame and move the parts to a frame with better street cred!

If you could get last year's model at a discount, then even better

Didn't those yellow Ralley team bikes come with Zipps and DA? Quite few of them were never ridden and bought as donor bikes..

you getting married your debt is only going to start now. As they say you can't be happy forever you have to get married some time. Hahaha

all jokes aside I agree with you I hate debt all I have is my bond and I don't even like that.

Not having debt makes life much easier you know how much you can spend on your bike and still eat the month.

And Team Microsoft/MTN got some pretty good results on those Raleighs. In fact those Raleighs got more results across road, mtb and BMX than the other brands put together.

 

I'm still p*ssed that Raleigh ditched Probike/Scott and decided to concentrate on the supermarket trade again.
