Oxidation of spoke nipples?

mavic?

Yes, to remove the nipple from the thread you cut the spoke near the hub, bend a portion at right angles and use it to undo the nipple.  The aluminium spoke bonds so fas to the nipple that this works.

I have news for Sapim.  Most stuffed nipples that I see are anodized.

eish H .. hopefully mine hold up almost 4 years .. and im a bit of a hak , but do ride high psi in tyres so think that saves me alot with rims .. if sacrificing for some washout . ye got them under 2k when 26ers took a market dive, im not gonna look inside rim well .. haha

best wishes with yours, hope they hold out .... and don't worry about opening them up to view the rim well .... the crack goes straight through to the outside :P

had old crossmarks, LBS eventually (after soaking in every lube imaginable) took the rim to engineers to remove and redrill the nipple hole.

last set of mavics I ever owned

brilliant wheels, until you need to replace spokes (that's if you can find spokes)

BS to Sapim. I would like to show them the black anodized nipples from my son's wheel if I still had them. It was a mess. You could almost not recognise that it was a nipple. Most of the corrosion was on the part inside the rim. It was almost as if it was eaten away.

legit question real quick :

how does sealent affect the nipples if you have to tape up the rim for tubeless ? Like if A liquid( the sealent) could get through the air leak would be much more noticeable and you would redo it

am i missing something ?

I have yet to see a wheel where some of the sealant did not leak through or around the tape. Meaning it will be difficult to tell if the sealant had a role to play in the corrosion of the nipples. I would replace the tape if I think it has perished to some extent.

maybe im just overly anal about cleaning wheels but i'd be surpised if there has even been just a few drops of sealent near my nipples

... the sounded weird  :D

In the case with my son's wheel, he had a moerse nail that went through the tyre and the rim tape right at one of the nipple access holes. Sealant went into the cavity of the rim. I obviously did not manage to clean out all the sealant, and the end result was a complete wheel build 4 months later.

Next time this happens I submerge the whole rim in a tub of water.

Corrosion is a bit like cancer, it’s going to happen and there is no cure. You can do certain things to prevent it and prolong the life of the parts ( like avoiding dissimilar metal combinations, aluminium and magnesium alloys ).

I guess it's about making an informed choice.  Know the pro's & con's of both options and decide which to use.  I for one will continue to use alloy nipples and if I have to re-build a wheel every few years then no problem as it's a bit of a hobby for me.

ty H .. wow almost look like yours just split from tension/strain ... cant see much corrosion ? except last inside pic .. but mostly looks like old sealant .

In my opinion, for 99% of wheel builds, there is no sound reason for using alloy nipples. No, aesthetics (coloured nipples) isn't a good enough reason.

The weight difference is an even poorer reason to do so, the difference being so negligible.
