Insurance offering vouchers instead of cash settlement

Hi guys

So at the recent Durby Dash my car was broken into and a lot of my bike tools, pump and equipment was stolen.

Insurance has finally decided to settle my claim.

However, they are offering me the value of my claim in the form of vouchers to be used at partner stores only.

Much to my frustration I try to explain to them that in Cape Town most of us, including myself, make use of CWC for our cycling goods and I have no business getting my relevant cycling goods at a Makro or Sportmans Warehouse.

They are refusing to settle my claim to me in Cash saying they are within their right to only offer vouchers.

Do I have any right to insist on a cash option and how does one manage to go about this?

That is utter BS.

Who is this? This better not be discovery.

Just tell them the tools etc are not at Sportsmans etc and that you will not be in the same position as before.

My daughter's iphone was recently stolen and Discovery gave us Istore vouchers. I was due for an upgrade any so got a new phone that way and therefore did not want the replacement phone they offered. They said that they cannot give me cash only vouchers. To be honest it felt fair to me as I did not have cash stoled, it was a cellphone. Their obligation is to replace the stolen item not necessary provide me with cash.

I think from their perspective it serves 2 purposes. They probably get rebates from these companies and it reduce the attractiveness of fraudulent claims.

Momentum insurance.

I've lodged a complaint now with the Ombudsman for short term insurance.

I'm not standing for this.

I completely understand things from this perspective as it can be very easy to go and pocket the cash or whatever.

These vouchers to be used at partner stores still does not prevent me to go buy a new couch at Tafelberg furnitures instead of cycling tools at Makro.

Doesn't that not also defeat the purpose of the claim?

I have provided them with my police case number, as well as evidence of the break-in, relevant quotes, etc, for this to be a legitimate claim.

If your policy wording says that they can give you vouchers to replace your losses, then they are within their rights.

What does your policy docs say?

Remember, insurance is supposed to put back in the position you were i before the incident or loss occurred. Cash is just one method of doing that.

Read your policy and see what it says

Based on the one post that was available when you posted, how can you make this very strong claim?

Some years back, our house was broken into and my camera equipment was stolen.

Santam settled the claim with a 'credit card', which could be used anywhere (with certain 'partner stores' offering discounts).  I ended up buying groceries with the card for months, as I replaced the photography equipment by buying second hand (privately).

I understand why they don't want to give cash, but if you need to replace by buying privately (i.e. need to pay cash), they at least need to give you the option of using the card / vouchers pretty much anywhere.

Having to buy cycling gear at Sportsman's or Makro would seriously suck.

Generally your wording will state something like:

Repair, replace or pay cash or any combination there of.

Usually a claims card is issued, similar to a MasterCard debit card  if the item is not replaced by the insurer,

I find it highly unlikely that the partner stores will have some of the specialised tools that a bike shop will have.

You have your IceToolz tool box stolen, you can "replace" it with inferior quality tools from their partners. Limiting someone's choice does not put them back in the same place as before the theft.

Thats like saying, we will replace your car but you can only chose from these dealers. soz...

He uses his own discretion.

Should not be a problem?

Half a post would have had me at utter BS.

This buddy buddy **** irritates me to no end.  If I don't want to buy at your "partner stores" then I don't want to.

Good to know it is Momentum.

Time to move both my car insurance policies.

Thanks for the heads up.

Tell them to ****off. Settle this issue, and then switch to someone else.

It doesnt matter if you use the cash to buy somethong else, that is none of their business. They must put you in the same financial position as before your loss. Hate these skelms.
