Mental Health

I purchased my dream bike, second hand, in June 2018. It was amazing, fantastic and all the other adjectives one uses when you are in love. There was just one issue which I had and it was a slight creaking noise only audible to me when the bike was in the 8th and 9th sprocket of my shimano ultegra drivetrain. I had the bike serviced only for the noise to return a few days later. Changed the type of lube I used from wax to wet, numerous visits to bike shops and Internet videos in search of possible solutions. I could relate to those people who hear voices in their head and would avoid those gears when riding for my own sanity.

I then had to have my bike valued for insurance purposes and was asked by the assistant if I knew that my chain was the wrong way on and that the lettering on the chain should be on the outside. He explained to me that this type of chain is asymmetrical and one directional in order to assist shifting and reduce noise. My eureka moment. I changed the chain myself for fear of relapsing into my paranoid state, which by now I had nicely under control.

I have just returned from a 3 hour ride where I road my local loop in 8th and 9th gear for 90% of it. I'm pleased to report that the noises in my head are gone.

PS

I know there are greater problems in the world requiring greater solutions but for now I will leave that to the non cyclist out there.

I know that this is the internet and people are entitled to their sick opinions, but sometimes someone comes up with such perverse rubbish that it cannot go unchallenged.

What in your warped mind could possibly be a greater problem than persistent drive chain noise?

Edit:

Apologies for going of the deep end there. Although I do not agree with it, I have been informed that there is an argument to be made that a recurring bottom bracket creak COULD be worse. Sorry.

  :D  I suspect my slight deafness is an advantage because when I DO hear this type of thing, I KNOW it is in my head. Poor Beattbox, my riding buddy, I think he suffered greatly from creaks originating from my bikes.

V12 has the same problem when I ride my Shimano equiped road bike

like when you get a small stone or thorn stuck in your tire tread and transition onto tarmac....

ill stop right there and pic them all out. The anticipation of the ticks and clicks as your wheel turns is enough to go crazy lol

Riding next to someone with a noisy bike is definatly worse than a noisy bottom bracket...

On the 94 I rode next to this guy who's bottom bracket was clicking on every pedal stroke, shame, poor bugger, I would have bailed for sure, no way I could have stood that noise for 80 kays. He must have stopped at one of the workshop stations come to think of it.

Cannot be anything more irritating known to man (aside from chinese water torture of course)

agree I built a new bike for my brother on Friday after work and needed to be done for our Saturday ride. And somehow there was a "ching ching" noise when he put the power down but only sometimes and drove me nuts trying to find the noise.

Repetitive noises are enough to make me give up on a race. On two occasions (one road bike, the other MTB) I heard a clicking noise at a specific point in turning the cranks. On both occasions I thought it must be the bottom bracket that’s worn, but it was brand new. Stopped to check. On the road bike the crank arm was brushing against the tip of the hand pump, so I just turned it a bit - noise gone. On the MTB, which had just been serviced, the cadence thingymabob was moved further up the crank arm causing it to brush against the widest part of the frame. Moved it back down - beautiful silence!

There IS something more irritating than a bb creak - a politician riding a bike with a bb creak!

Most elusive of sounds has been the saddle rail insertion. The other would be the oval chain ring and the shimano clutch derailleur not playing mooi together.

There are people who ride bikes that sound like a bucket of rusty nails being mixed with an eggbeater. When the bike comes in it's "just a wash and lube please".

This is what causes my mental health issues.
