Cannondale Warranty Issue. I need advice.

i want to see a picture of the chainring in question before i pass judgement

the amount of force needed to bend a chainring would have to be massive.

if it was crashed the teeth would be totalled along with other damage to the bike.

2nd issue:

You bought a Cannondale. they are made of pasta, expect it to break twice.

that said, it will be replaced - with a different colour to your original one, twice.

and it will take 3 months to replace, twice.

Cannondale have replaced 2 bikes for me.  Flash with painted damage and scalpel that cracked

Both times spoke to Lionel at Omnico,  He handles the claims.  If they dont replace he can give you a explanation.

Check the website, phone the switchboard and get this number

I agree...speak to Omnico, go directly to the source.

side view?

and close up of the teeth!

Took this pics the morning straight after it happened. Didn't think I was going to have a problem or to post pics anywhere, so didn't bother with close-ups and sideviews. The bike is still at the shop.

Need a side view picture. Any loose chainring bolts? bent chain links from previous chain drops?

This isn't really a Cannondale fabrication issue, its a setup or chainring manufacture issue or the bike shop setup somehow.

a chainring must have had sideways force to bend it... it cannot bend in sheer.

No loose bolts.

Had one previous chain drop in that period where they tried to adjust the derailleur to stop it from scratching.

Your last sentence was exactly my thoughts!! That this should be impossible! That's why I said I don't know what they did to fix the derailleur from scratching. The thing was dodgy from the start. That wobbly crank action from the start just didn't seem right.

I bent a chainrig like that. Couldn't get the crank of the square taper so I just took a hammer to it (was replacing the crank anyway and the chainrings were fixed to the crank)...but it took a couple of good solid swings before the big blade bent and the swine finally came free from the taper BB....

I took the bike back to the shop so they can make the necessary adjustments to sort out the scratching.

The bike came back, and still the scratching was there, they couldn't adjust it enough to stop scratching.

A week later(because of the distance from where I live) I took it back again so they can have another crack at it.

Left the bike there for a week, got it back, and the scratching was a lot better and was running silently for 98% of the time. I'm not sure what they did to fix it.

.

My first question I would want answered is,what did the bike shop do to make the noise disappear when they couldn’t fix it the first time ? And what was the actual problem with a brand new bike,,that I presume they assembled.

Have not had great results with omnico either at first, then Lionel sorted it out.

But I would seriously be questioning my bike shop first.

From those pics (Waiting for a side view)......derailleur is too high.  Chain got stuck between the derailleur and chainring and the chainring gave way before the chain could.

We used to make chainrings and this was something that we saw when the chainring bolts were not tightened correctly or when the chain line was way off and the chain does not engage the teeth correctly.

This looks like a bike shop set up issue to me... The noises from the get go are a red flag here

In the meantime take off the chainring and moer it flat with a hammer then go enjoy the ride. Make shire chainring bolts are tight and you should be good to go.

Methinks that was a shop setup issue or you banged it hard, not so sure about that though.

Of you have spent R100k there in 5 months and the shop isn't open to doing that relatively minor repair at no charge on such a new bike then its time to find a new lbs.
