Bike Hub 2019 Commuters Challenge

This is what it looked like this afternoon. Dodging hail marbles and ducking for the lightning that hit the fence just behind me.

The cars in the picture pulled off the road trying to escape the hail - the trees weren't much help. The wall did help a bit but the hail did find some holes in the helmet.

To me this is what commuting is all about. Obviously within the boundaries of staying safe, but it's commutes like these which are the most memorable.

Having said that, I have never cycled in HAIL before, as well as lightning in such close striking distance. Geeeez

This sets a new bar...

Been surprised a few times last summer but sudden showers with lightning.  It made me wonder where is the safest if there are no buildings around to take cover.  In the forests you are near trees that could get hit, or out of the forest in the open where you are highest point.  But in theory you should be isolated as you are on rubber tires.  So I just continued cycling while my ass keeps biting into my shorts everytime there is a lightning flash.  I suppose the good thing is as long as you hear thunder then you are okay.  Also got hit once last year by hail.  But managed to take cover at a building entrance but not after one or two pieces of ice said hi to me.

I bought a good waterproof jacket three years ago.  The problem though is that in most cases especially in summer you sweat so much under the jacket that you get just as wet.  I actually bought rain covers for my cycling shoes, although when the humidity is bad my feet also sweat quite a bit with that on.  Other than that if it is not too cold I just make sure my backpack with the laptop in has its rain cover on and then continue in the rain.  Last summer I hit several showers where it was raining so hard, you actually cycle into this wall of water.  It actually becomes fun as long as there is no ligthing.

I don't know about others but in my experience, in these heavy storms, you still get wet. I have zip lock bags in my bag and when it rains I put phone, wallet etc in the ziplock.

I add a Helly Hansen base layer and a windjammer. If I am leaving from home I will wear a pair of long finger neoprene skiing gloves

I normally only carry my office keys and phone (in a waterproof pouch)

Clothes and shoes are already at office and I have two laptops (one stays at home and one stays in the offce)

That was Benmore Gardens. When we left my office I still throught we're going to cycle around it. Was still light Randburg side.

I only wear a wind jacket for summer. It's highly visible and here in Gauteng it doesn't often rain when it's cold. Phone goes in ziplock. Keys was in side pocket but thankfully still works.

Well the snow has stopped and we have some clear weather our way.  The only problem is with no clouds the temps drop a bit.  But maybe ... just maybe if there is not ice on the road I might get on the board next week with 1 maybe 2 commutes.  Holding thumbs here.

This elevation is in feet, right?

Yes it is in feet. I contacted support and they said it will use whatever your Strava account is set up to use, which is meters, so I am perplexed as to why it still shows feet.

Is it possible to see a combined leaderboard?

I also looked into this, it sucks that the default split is by gender. I'm assuming/hoping that only once the challenge is complete are you able to to see combined results.

I may just try and put some sort of combined dashboard together using a 3rd party BI tool and publish it somewhere for all to see...
