Anyone in the know, know whats happening at Cemair? No press releases, no communication from the company...the silence is ominous...

Yap, hard to see how they can survive this in terms of public perception and trust. They are pretty much disposing of their reputation through this and their lack of communication and break down in future support from loyal customers. Financially, the operator must also be on their knees - the commercial airline business in SA is so marginal that these downtime losses would be very hard to recover for a private operator unless they have deep deep pockets which is doubtful  considering the shortcuts they seem to take to stay in business and make money.

Cemairs appeal against the second grounding was dismissed by the Judge today...

Just remembered a pretty insane experience that I had a few years ago, we went to watch a night shooting display at the army base in Bloemfontein. This included some missile firing runs and so on from a few Rooivalk Helicopters.

On our way into the base, while driving along the access road, the 2 Rooivalke were flying up and down the road showing off a bit. Unexpectedly, one of them decided it would be a good idea to fly next to me on the road, with the helicopter facing towards me!!! The look on our face must have been priceless as the Pilots burst into laughter before flying off.

The amazing skill those pilots have to fly sideways along a road is insane.

I must have been about 9, maybe 10 y.o. when we went for our annual vac up to Kruger N.P. Pa was towing his Sprite caravan with the VW Microbus. We were trundling along the road from Tshipise to Punda Maria one fine morning. I remember the road. Straight as an arrow, dotted with baobab trees all along the sides. Anyway, all of a sudden pa shouts some choice words and points at a jet screaming towards us at about roof height along the road, straight in a collision course with us, almost as if it was playing "chicken". Anyway, a quick flash and it passed overhead, to be followed moments later by an tremendous noise and shaking of the car. Needless to say, we properly pooped ourselves. It turns out it was a mirage. It must have been probably about 100 or so feet from the deck. All I know is that day my fascination with planes began.

They were on their way to attend an airshow in the USA. Flying up Africa to Europe and then over to the USA.

I think the whole drama is on YouTube, including the restoration, and a last minute problems before that flight

Yup...with cost. Probably the end of their SA commercial passenger operations - some are saying that they will employ much of their local fleet up in Africa to expand existing operations there and move away from the SA industry.

Sad still, livelihoods lost and one less operator (however small) in a highly competitive industry is never good news for the flying public.

Did a big clean up in the garage last weekend, and found a lot of stuff I had forgotten about, including these photos from one of the Waterkloof Air Force Base air shows in the early 2000's:

There was only one air show where those birds were there all together .... 1995.  The 75th birthday celebration of the SAAF.  I still remember it very well as I just started to work in IT and wanted to take leave for the air show but did not have any leave built up yet.

The Man Utd shirt was in use in 2000-2002, meaning the show I went to was in 2000. I met my wife in 2001 and we went in 2001 where the B1-B was the last flyover of the day.

I think it was later than 95. I only started school in 91 and I seem to remember I was in high school already when I went to that show. I matriculated in 02.
