...getting to a point or personal fitness level in whatever sport where even though you pushing yourself harder than you ever have... you dont feel pain or strain, just the sheer unbridled joy that doing that sport brings you. (oh and smashing your personal record again and again)

it NEVER gets easier, it just gets faster.

Awesome thread. I have thought about this before and last year I set myself the goal of achieving three things before i turn 40 (now 15 months away).

a)Sub3 argus

b)sub 90 half marathon

c)2:11 800m

the thinking behind it all:

a) (never been in a decent enough group to do this), and my official best time of 2:55 is belieavable was admittedly on the 50km shortened route with a LOT of stops. but i can't really count that. Will most likely need to do some proper seeding races for next year and then the pressure will be on!

b)if you're counting half marathons in hours you're a hacker. my pb for this is about 93mins

c)this was my event at school, but I can't remember what my pb is. I love the 800m, so am going to try and beat the 1896 Athens winning olympic time. this is very achievable (i think, surely I'm less than 20% slower than Rudisha)

so far I'm on 0/3

If you're mentioning THE David Rudisha in ANY WAY of your personal goals, then you absolutely deserve to be in the 'ultimate achievement' thread.

Running:

  • Sub-90min half
  • Sub-3h full

Cycling (depends on the discipline):

  1.  DH: qualifying for the final race (i.e. top 80/60?)
  2. Enduro: Top 20/stage win as a privateer
  3. Road/CX/XC/BMX: don't know, not my preferred disciplines

This was also my event at junior school and the one i almost ran provincially for. I can't remember my junior school record either which really bugs me. it was around 2:30 I think. I think a sub 2:30 would be a good goal now for me

2h30 for 800m, I think with a bit of training I might be able to achieve that  :D

Sub 9 Comrades. How hard can it be.. Right? I only realised what an achievement it is when I started doing marathons.

I would love to do a sub 20 5, and 3h30 marathon as well.

okee dokee let's get this back on track.

I always wondered how hard it could be to do a sub4 minute mile.

It's still tough, 94 people did it last year (although the mile is not normally run as a major track event anymore) - https://www.iaaf.org/records/toplists/middle-long/one-mile/outdoor/men/senior/2018?regionType=world&page=1&bestResultsOnly=true

Amateur achievements, are always the best when you can klap a pro at your game.

There is no better event than the beermile.

I did my first beer mile in 2001, the "Lion mile" at maties/coetzenburg. It is BRUTAL!

For olympic athletes there is a four year cycle. WC/Olympics/WC/blank.  the blank year in 2013, Nick Symmonds (who came 5th in london 2012 1500m) set out to smash the 5min mark.

He made quite a public statement of going for it, and was going to bring his high level training regime and beer scientists to the party...He never got there.

and instead it went to this guy.

but just like Bannister's time not lasting things move on, quickly.

it now sits at #23 on the list, with the current record a ridiculous

4:33:6

If you want to hold the SA record.

Then it's down in 154 on the alltime list. a 5:47 held by a certain Elroy Gelant (at altitude nogal!). I'm not sure what his drinking is like, but he's rather quick on a tartan oval.

A sub 20 5km is one of my goals

Managed to get a 25.03 at my local parkrun not too long ago. that means i need to slice a minute off of my current pace. Seems impossible for me at this stage
