Over the last 11 months this saddle has been raised 10cm !

At this rate it is about 3 to 4 months before he can stand over the Mongoose    Already cycled around our cul-de-sac, with me walking next to him.

Great stuff Chris! Something that you have done together will always be worth much more than something you just bought for him! You showed him that one can take an old thing, give it new life, make something unique out of it, do it right and be proud of it. That is a valuable life lesson, if you ask me!

This is a truly awesome build and would be a very unique experience for anyone his age. I do have one question though. How long is that stem and have you considered going with a shorter one to make the reach less?

It is a 100mm stem.

Thanks for asking the question.

Today was the first time he properly sat on the bike, and YES the reach was the first thing I noted ....

I am not sure what the effect would be on the handling of the bike, I went shorter on the stem .... 80mm ?  or maybe even 50mm ?

I would hate to change the behaviour of the bike, and make it "twitchy" ....

HOPING the experienced riders can assist with advise on this one

Chris, in my experience it is not the night and day difference you think it will be, it does make handling more snappy but not twitchy as you'd expect.

My wife rides a 29er with a 680mm handlebar and 45mm stem, I used to ride a 26er with a 580mm bar and 60mm stem - no handling issues whatsoever. I would say cut that length right down to 50mm or 60mm...

Had a lekker chat with Mark.  50mm stem bought, and to be fitted soon.

and then to check and adjust cable lengths  :whistling:

But FIRST, time to get some fresh trail dust on the TITAN    Garage time is nice, trail time so much better.

Had nice rides on Saturday and Sunday (on his Titan).

Did manage to do this little tweak though -

BEFORE :

The standard settings for brake levers are for adult hands, with nice long reach fingers

Measuring a LOOONG 50mm between the grips and the levers !!

HOWEVER, thankfully there are ajustment screws that allows you bring the levers closer to the grip.  MUCH coser

Now Maritz CAN have his hands properly on the grips, extend two fingers and pull the brakes.

PS - also fitted the shorter stem .... will first shorten the cables before posting pics.  Maritz sits a LOT better with the shorter reach !!!  THANKS for the input Hubbers !!
