Dear all. I am new to this forum. I am trying to find a recommendation for a super strong frame. I have broken two now and am over it. What would you recommend? I am looking for a trail type frame xl that can be used hard. My preference is strength, durability and functionality over name brand. If you have any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated.

Hardtail and it must be steel

BTR and Cotic and good ones to look at cause they use Reynolds steel instead of chromoly like most other steel bikes

What exactly did you break?

If you are looking for a full suspension trail frame, I would recommend a Giant Reign. I've never owned one, but while I rode two Trances, I have more than one riding buddy who rode a Reign and put them through everything that the mountain could throw at them. Not just trail riding, but enduro, jumps and even light downhill stuff. The second reason I would recommend it, is that Giant is generally good with their frame warranty, replacing broken frames pretty quickly if you get your side of it right (proof of purchase, 1st owner). I think this is important if you are a heavier ? rider and you have a hard riding style (with a history of breaking bikes).

The question is, why are you braking frames? Are you a heavy rider, in terms of weight, or are you riding beyond the capabilities of the frames you had? A bit more info would work for the best advice.

Love my Tallboy. She is so tough. I dont ride her so often lately. But I have to admit that I do get hard when I look at her.

Santa Cruz Hightower? I watch some of Ben Cathro's videos on YT and he seems to be happy with it. He mentions in one of his videos that he has broken a few frames, but not yet his Santa Cruz.

Aluminium 7000 series overbuilt dual sus (good for wheels) like mine. Banshee Prime. Two triangles linked by two stubby is links. Strong AF.

When I was looking for a strong light HT frame, I did a lot of research and the only frame I found without a weight limit was the Santa Cruz Highball cc. They were also the only to allow for a 120mm fork (these where carbon HTs I was looking at)

Have a look on YouTube how they test and try to break 1.

Buddy of mine built a Frankenstein Highball with 160mm travel and 650b wheels (29er frame) and he loves it.

I am going to suggest a aluminium Giant Trance, I only manage to break mine after three years. And that is after being ridden close to its limits nearly every time I rode it.

I second Bageara's Cotic suggestion. The Flare Max will be a good fit for you.

V18 is also a big boy, and his Banshee prime seems to be holding up well. It is built like a cross between a tank and a school bus, but gets the job done.

Make sure you buy new, so that if the unthinkable happens, at least you have warranty support for your broken frame. Giant SA gave me confidence with my frame replacement, so my next bike will an all likelihood be another Trance, but this time in the 29er flavour.

Thanks for all the comments and recommendations. Gives of a good idea of what to research.

Answer to queries:

- I’m 100kg before breakfast

-194cm

- could probably be accused of riding beyond my capabilities.

Where exactly are the frames breaking?

From your height being on the borders of L and XL what often happens is that people ride with their seatpost too far out which causes extra stress and causes toptube/downtube junction breaks.
