Just checked the Assos Rs S9 bib at South African online shop is about R 4200.00 and at Bikeinn the price is R 2300.00. So is the import tax not the rip off?

Couple of important steps missed with regards to how you treat bibs, and by extension, bike kit:

Only use a washing machine if it's a front loader, and use the delicates cycle. No heat. Top loaders cannot move items properly so you end up pulling it around the centre post. The little baggie that used to come with assos was great for avoiding stretching during the wash cycle.

Use detergent that has NO enzymes. Enzymes are being put into everything nowadays because once activated, they will digest grease and protein stains, which is great for the wash basket but they also digest lycra, because its a natural fibre. Cheap bibs last long in enzyme detergents because they're often composed of zero real lycra and rather nylon and elastics.

Only wash cycle kit with cycle kit, zips closed and clothes turned inside out. The prevents piling (those little balls that stick to friction areas), and snags from sharp edges and zips.

Don't tumble dry, don't wring out.

Fabric softener actually isn't a really problem. It's just *** for helping the natural fibres absorb moisture. Softener is basically a wax finish. Want to have a fun experiment at home? Soak a towel in sta soft, worn it out, let it dry. Then fold it and pout a cup of water on to the towel.. Voila! You have a waterproof towel...

Best way to go is hand-wash in a simple powder, Pick N pay no name is the only one I can find at the moment without enzymes. Rinse well, squeeze out excess water, and hang to dry inside out.

Will last for years, and won't go see thru...

The lack of stitching of the wings of the crotch area of the chamois is to create independent movement of the fabric and chamois in this area and it works very very well. Its the very reason why the bib or shorts DOESN't bucnh up and create pinch points.

Sure there are cheaper bibs that are as comfortable out of the box but none are still as comfortable as ASSOS 3-5years later. Most are lappies by then

Definitely doesn't work well. Must just be me then, sorry. Edited by philip.maree

For the appalling way my bibs get treated in the wash, they sure do last well!

Bibs are subjective, just like saddles... And just like saddles, you can find some very expensive ones that look great and are well loved by many, but it doesn't meant it'll suit your rear..

I, personally, loved the S5 assos but hate the new ones. I also don't like the floating chamois and the too low cut front and a number of other things about the latest shorts.

I love my MTN branded vermarc bibs and adore my giordana FRCs... Those are amazing. But for me.. Just like I only get on with the newest generation of spez romin saddles, but my best mate thinks it's an axe, it's personal.

Coming on here to bash a brand simply because they didn't work for you isn't fair. Leave the commentary to the braai, but be lekker and always tell people to rather find out for themselves. Lucky you that cheap bibs work best.

Not really bashing the brand, just bashing the change to something that was working extremely well for me. Cheap bibs don't work for me, different brand expensive bibs are now just the better option where Assos used to be the no brainer.

Anycase, I agree that it's a subjective opinion and people should try for themselves.

And BikeHub is the braai!

Thread title: “Assos cycling shorts rip off”.

Sounds a lot like brand bashing. We’re all built differently and brands try to cater to these differences through different fit for different body shapes.

True that.

The best advice I ever got about buying cycling shorts or bibs, was to try them on, then bend over forwards, almost double, like you will be when riding in a flat aero position. Wiggle a bit, to hell with what others think. Then feel with your hands whether the thickest firmest part of the padding is exactly over the most prominent part of your sit bones. If it is not, those bibs will never be comfortable. If it is, they might be comfortable. The positioning of the padding for your anatomy is the critical thing.OK, one of the critical things.

Please ask someone you trust and love to ride behind you on a bright sunny day.........and tell you if your bibs have become see-through! They tend to do that! And it is an ugly sight, when you are wheel-sucking to save your own life, and you have to stare at that!

Another reason to wear baggies?

;)

I liked the orange chamois. The purple one is not so great, imo.

Owned a pair, didn't like them lasted about 2-3 years.

For me not worth the monies, but it's a bip each to it's own in that regard

On the road? The fashion police will will tear you limb from limb!   ;)  :D

The great bib short debate!

Seems to me you all have very precious derrieres!

Assos are definitely worth the price tag though. For rides less than 2 hours I don't really wear padding. A cut off jean short on the road/gravel and some comfy baggies do the trick.

But wearing the same bibs for 12 days on Freedom Challenge or on day 7 of an expedition race I would choose Assos every time!

They tend to use a more robust lycra in the important area, which adds to the feeling and longevity. Cheesy Provita and Enjoy both use a much more fragile Lycra which tends to tear or become brittle easier.
