Bike Hub classifieds vibe

What is happening to Bikehub classifieds?!

Loads of lowball offers in direct messages from guys that's been on the forum for 3 or 4 years, but not a single post. Ad goes up for R1200 for a brand new item that sells for R2200 - and guyX with zero posts sends pm in 1min offering R800. No hellos or formalities, no bargaining, no questions, no courteous chatter - just an amount with a question mark. R800?

Not a single comment on the ad. Where's the days of "dibs" and "PM sent" - or is everyone scared that if they show interest someone else is going to buy it first?

Yesterday I sold a bunch of items over BH, and not a single comment on the ads - but plenty of Pm's and mails.

Not sure I like the new BH classified vibe - feels more like gumtree?!

Sounds more like specific people not interested in humans or socialising and just want to get "bargains" or trades.

I do agree that your description aligns with my own gumtree/olx experiences. I would hazard a guess that the onus falls on the bikehub users/community members to mould it how they want it, rather how they receive it. Bikehub is after all a community platform with selling features and not a selling platform!

That is all easier said than done - if it isn't against the rules (it may be), a thread with usernames to avoid that lowball or aren't courteous... Just realised I described what the rating system was designed for.

Can we get pictures? But not curated - I would like to see the entire product please. If its good, can we do a cash plus part exchange? R750 plus a used 105 cassette?

Just posted 4 ads and almost instantly had 2 di*khead offers, I won't sell to these people on principle

Theory:

They are Students/ unemployed/employed at SOE's trying to make money on the side. They constantly hit refresh on latest Classifieds with idea to get items at lowball offers which means they can resell later and make a profit.

Agreed, I will not sell to them, so no issue there.

But I am pissed that they are probably gobbling up all the bargains and reselling them for profit while the rest of us miss out on a good upgrade opportunity.

dont think its limited to BH classifieds.

I've been getting rid of a number of old items (non cycling related) that I've advertised at various places, and the same thing happens.

My best guess is its the gumtree bargain hunters now moving here just trying to score a deal... Its these guys business to buy and resell bike goods so they are always on the classified ads and responding the minute an ad is posted especially if its a good deal, but will always try get a better deal. They couldn't give to fluffs about cycling, they just know there is money in cycling goods.

As for comments... for some reason they dont show up or even give the option to post comments on my desktop, Ive only seen them when im on my mobile.

I think it means the bikehub classifieds is growing up, and is now well known outside of just "enthusiast" cyclists who are forum members/participants.

Another contributing factor is that gumtree seems to have been overrun by scammers, so people are looking for alternative marketplaces that they can trust(both legit people and the scammers that will follow).

When selling other stuff thats also why I prefer Facebook Marketplace... you can sort of profile the people responding to your ad before you even respond to them... although the listing/search function for items is terrible.
