An eBike category has been added to the road race I’m associated with, for the shorter distance only. Why the short distance? It’s not a seeding event for other races so it doesn’t really matter if they have a timing chip or not. The youth category is managed by an official, so the rest are purely fun riders.

There aren’t any prizes, for position, other than the racing categories. There will be podium acknowledgment (bragging rights) for the top 3 in the tandems and AL bunch, and spot prizes for the masses. If anyone wants to race, they need a racing license, which will be hard for an eBike person to use in the racing categories.

We may lose a few people as a result, but we can’t please all, all of the time.

I'm all for people getting out there and get healthy exercise and share our beautiful sport. But its interesting checking this topic after my altercation with ebikes on an event last weekend. An ebike team of two were pacing a team we were competing in for the mixed category podium in a stage race. The last straw for me was when the bigshot man on the ebike stopped at a waterpoint and collected supplements and stuff for the team competing against us while they carried on riding. Please don't interfere in the racing (even old people racing for a podium in mixed teams). We all exchanged unpleasant words after the event. I apologized for using the P word (not pedalpower) but bigshot sponsor maintained I'm an competitive asshole because i didn't stop the previous day when someone crashed.

Your argument for ebikes in the shorter event seem v rational. It seems 947 have done the opposite to you. Any thoughts to why they've done it that way?

It's simple. Just boycott any event that permits e-bikes. And let the organisers know why you refuse to enter. That'll pretty soon ensure that events are properly seperated.

That's your IMO, wont stop me.

Maybe, with an eBike, they (947) think they are capable of finishing the long distance. Who knows?

and there will always be that 1% that messes it up for the rest .....

I am SURE there were many other ebike riders on that same event that had a wonderfull time out in nature, with zero impact on the race results ....

should be easy enough to take a short video of these - both the ebikers and the cheaters -hand it over to the race officials and remove them from the results.

Or just don't mix them then you don't have to sort out complaints afterwards?

Think the hub-narrative that it's "only 1%" making trouble while the rest is happy to cruise slowly at the back of the field is incredibly naive.

But by not mixing ebikes with push bikes you ignore the reality that mtb events are challenged for numbers and that attracting growing segments of the market is important for event survival

If you ride an eBike in a normal pedal bicycle category and you use a timing chip, that is cheating.

Don’t try and shift the guilt by saying that “so what it’s just a casual event” or blaming the organizers.

What’s next? “Oh let me use some EPO so that I can keep up with my friends it’s only a fun event, so what do you care?”

It might not affect the actual outcome to other people (unless it’s cases like Grootlems) but it does make you a cheat. Own it.

So true. I don't know how any serious cyclist can defend e-bikes participating in a timed event alongside regular push bikes.

I don't think E-bikes should be categorized as bicycles. They are motor driven, and the technology is still only in its infancy. Just wait and see - soon E-bikes will make several KiloWatts and not just a few Watts... just look at Tesla.

Personally I don't really have a problem, I won't move any more than I normally would, but only an ignorant or naive fool would claim that they are bicycles. E-bikes are motorcycles, and should therefore compete as such.

It is unfair for those who genuinely would like to compete on their bicycles, should E-bikes be allowed in the same categories or race results. I find it unreasonable to argue against someone who would like to perform on merit, no matter the level, using the "it's only for fun" argument - that is similar to saying that just because you will never be on the podium you are not allowed to be competitive!

No one is advocating for ebikes to participate along with regular bikes.

They do however sometimes participate in their own category along the same route. Practically that's the only way it can work
