also pre Zuma where anyone in contempt of his law is a possible assassination target

I do remember one or two quite outlandish conspiracy theories around the Hansie incident.

Something to the extent of the bookies sabotaging the plane in an attempt to prevent him from spilling the beans on more of them...

Luckily this was in the pre-Facebook era where rumours and hearsay didn't spread like wild fire

That's what they told Hansie as well

Sad day. I remember the morning like it was yesterday. Very low cloud cover. Quiet outside in the early morning. Hearing the bang as the plane hit. Thinking nothing of it as I left for PE. Later the day my boet in PE telling me "It's bad about Hansie, hey". The penny dropping.

I saw Hansie about 2 weeks prior in the queue at Nedbank in town.

The dam is getting the wall lifted to cater for the growing need of the town. When I lived in George (since 1980) the dam was never a problem in terms of water shortages. The first time there was a problem was in 2008, and then already there were calls to increase the wall height to alleviate drought related issues, but as always, the municipality decided to ignore the problem the moment it started raining again in around 2009. I left in 2013. I am glad they have begun lifting the wall at last.

Still, cyclists all mountain users should know better than to go venture in a place they KNOW they don't belong. I am still not buying the whole thing of him not being close to the wall construction site. If the guy fell either side of the wall, an ambulance could get there without needing a road to be specially built. Either from Stander Street side, or from Saasveld side. The medical rescue crew would in either case not need to walk more than say 50 meters either way.

I am calling BS on the whole "this is being reported incorrectly" story by the "victim".

I tried driving a car from NMMU to the dam a few weeks ago. There are such huge drainage ditches through the roads that I gave up and drove to Pepsi Pools instead.

Eish, try not go onto sites in contravention of signage. I'm in construction and imagine the bunfight about P&G payment if work was effectively stopped by a 3rd party ("construction mafia" come to mind). Controlling access is silly sometimes; we have local people, cows and goats regularly on site and not much can realistically be done.

But maybe more seriously there could be insurance and liability issues that extend beyond construction from such accidents. MTB outriding through the Tongaat Hulett sugar cane pretty much ground to a halt pre EMBA due to, rumour has it, a quad bike vs tractor accident where the quad biker became litigious. My guess (a little more actually) is that many of SA's (KZN anyway) main MRB races and stage races rely on the good casual nature (and maybe not too much information getting to head office) of local land owners and their representatives and even the environmental authorities. Please don't rock this boat (i.e. don't be a ****).

That is super close to the houses, I know they know what they are doing, but after Knysna fires, I would be super stressed it I lived so close to Block 1&2.

I would too. Since controlled burns you only do during the winter months.
