Agree, I have ridden rhodes drive hundreds of time, if you position your bike properly and force the driver to engage their brains its fine.

This is my experience so far as well. It's the blissful unawareness when passing a cyclist that a problem. As soon as there is real awareness of the rider, drivers seem to give more space.

Just a thought that came to mind after seeing the pics, reading the close calls etc, would anyone, cyclists, non cyclists, any person with a license pass other vehicles on a solid white line if for example a truck or any other vehicle other than a bicycle is coming from the opposite direction or even pass any real vehicle (not a bicycle) with less than 1-1,5m+ between them?

Yes.  That is why there are so meany headon collisions in SA.

On Sunday as I was ascending Chappies from the south, I got passed by car from Deben. The driver passed me with less than 30 cm and some change, yet ALL the cars behind it passed me with more than 1.5 meters to spare (All CA by the way...).  I am not going to be talking about boxes and the ilk, but it would seem that Capetonians are becoming more or less cycle conscious, or it may just be the extremely LOUD PPA signage on that particular stretch.

The only successful engagement I've had was when a Gti shaved me up Signal Hill... No traffic around and plenty of space... Caught him at the parking lot and said 'gee man! you gave me such a skrik. please nest time, give a bit more space'. guy was 'oh sorry man. sure thing'

all other times it's been super stressful and it's because of the 1m rule... motorists just don't know.

Sorry to hear.

I also had a close call the other day. You know the type. Red GTI, drivers seat backrest lowered so that it is resting on the rear seat he cant see over the dashboard. Caught the guy at the next traffic light.

Asked him to roll down his window. Told him that he was a touch too close for comfort.

He told me to eff off.

So I mentioned to him that the bottle of beer that he was holding between his legs is illegal.

He asked me if I am an officer of the law. I said no I am not.

He told me then the fact that he was drinking and driving has nothing to do with me and that I should eff off again.

heres I thought I had a few weeks back after a particularly close shave with a car.

I screamed and swore as is the natural reaction to nearly loosing your life, but what if we can stop the motorist, calm ourselves down (easier said than done) and very politely ask the driver for a chat.

Then in as nice a possible way as you can under the circumstances explain to him why you need the extra space when being passed.

Obviously all easier said than done, but if we take the time to educate maybe, just maybe, if the stars and moon aline we can get some change happening

The problem is that 9 times out of 10 it is because said driver is not willing to wait 10 seconds for a gap to get past you, so expecting him to stop and engage in any meaningful conversation in zilch, nada, nil......

It's a nice notion, but you are more likely to get shot or punched in this country.

+1.

Can someone please give us one example ... just one, where there was a successful charge laid with someone passing to close by.  Hopping on a internet thread posting pic would not do anything as well as so called d**s is propably not on here in anyway.  (Must say I was hoping for a different pic  )

4 years ago i got taken out by some rude bitch .  She clipped my handlebars while i was going 60kmh down visserhoek road.  I went down broke my arm.  She sped off only to come back 10 minutes later.  I pressed charges.  After a month of pleading with the cops for action i was told they dropped the charges due to insuffecient evidence.

I had an eyewitness, i was knocked over, i had 2 operations and nothing happened.  So much for the 1 m rule.
