And another *****g puncture. Sorry lads I will never touch those Maxxis. Call me what you want but they now make shake.

Thankfully Maxxis DO have more reliable and stronger tyres for those of us that dont mind a bit of weight and rolling resistance

The problem is these Aspen ST tyres have the full suite of protection tech built in....!!!

Back in my day the Epic was all uphill, on lumpy grass fields, with rocks and torrential rain and dust, lots of dust from all the torrential rain. It was 48 degrees every day and they made the altitude for the entire event over 2,000m specifically for my Epic.

The hipster posers of today are obviously way softer than me, the older guy who was faster and faster the older he gets.

Gotta love people comparing Epics. Unless you rode the course today you have no idea of conditions and cut off times.

was that the year you trained in an Oxygen tent and had to go keto just to finish

you know in my day we only had one set of kit and had to hand wash kit everynight with lifebouy soap

Is it possible to puncture on every stage, and still win the Epic ....

COMIC SANS font

if everybody else does the same.

A real race would make a mandatory puncture stop where riders have to puncture their own tyre , repair it and then continue

the route appears harder but 16900m of vert still isn't special especially when measured against 680km. At best its slightly tougher. Maybe this is the hardest start in a while? I thoght it was the toughest route since 2008  but I'm not so sure due to the reduction in climbing fro 17000 odd to 16900

comparison:

2004 785km -> 17380m^

2005 901km -> 16020m^

2006 921km -> 16605m^

2007 886km -> 15045m^

2008 966km -> 18529m^

===================New Era for golfers

2009 685km -> 14623m^

2010 722km -> 14635m^

2011 707km -> 14530m^

2012 782km -> 16300m^ (longest since 2008 but 2229 short on vert or a whole stage)

2013 704km -> 15950m^

2014 729km -> 14850m^

2015 748km -> 16000m^

2016 646km -> 15050m^

2017 695km -> 14550m^

2018 653km -> 13530m^

2019 630km -> 16650m^

2021 611km -> 14900m^

2022 681km -> 16900m^  (most vert since 2008 but way short on distance)

I could probably do some math to check average speed of the winners or better would be calorie consumption but I don't have that data.

its very difficult to put a tag "harder" when viewing it from the just the route data

And add the Rand per Kilometer stat as well please.

1.2/ 1.25 bar front/rear.

seems a little bit skimpy for average joe me

I ride/race Aspens, including W2W last year. I’m 80kg and run them at the same pressures as above (2.4” tyre on 25mm internal rims). Zero issues in 6 months. They are great tyres, fast and good grip in the dry.

A bit late to wish you well now as you've left already but all the best for today and I'm glad to hear you can continue, Hopefully you are obsessed with Bikehub and pick this up at the water point.

Drink lots today and pace yourself to recover.

Mix Rehidrat into one bottle and limit the sugary energy drinks.

Rather eat fruit and sweets at the water points. You don't need lots of sugar.

Eat good protein thats easy to digest

this should get you through today

Then recover and try again tomorrow

Haha thanks! Yes did exactly that today. Came in with 40mins to spare I think.

Finally made it to bed, now to catch up on sleep.

Crazy headwind, sleep deprived, 10hrs in the saddle, no cramps.. win in my book, hopefully bake to normal by tomorrow morning!
