Totally spitballing here, but the month delay in Egypt meant conditions were even cooler than originally planned. My thumbsuck is that all the hype, build up, planning, anticipation waiting etc etc led to firing out the gun a little too hot. I am assuming there would have been goals for the first few days and maybe day 1 was a bit over ambitious.

She was discharged on Saturday.
Heat was definitely a contributor if not the main cause.
She did spend 6 weeks in Arizona to prepare during our winter but maybe it wasn’t enough.

Wonder why she never rode during cooler months instead of year end?

Yes…Egypt is in the northern hemisphere so it’s approaching ‘winter’ there now remember😊😅

if you read through her planning…it was strategic too since this time of year a tailwind is prevalent all along the nile into Ethiopia or something.

With all the hype and excitement and what not, it is easy to just run on vibe and go out the gate a bit hard. I think we have all done it at some stage.

I can assure you it was not going out the gate too hard. There was a trigger and it was not over exertion. Not sure what yet but over exertion has been ruled out.

in 2016 I experienced something similar at the cape epic. Easy prologue but felt sick after . Recovered and then got dehydrated. On stage 1 . Recovered and then got stung by who knows how many bees on stage 2. Stage 3 my body crashed. Too many things aligned. I’m not allergic to bee stings but more more than 16 stings is a lot for anyone.
In Tegans case what that perfect storm was even the doctors don’t know yet.

I don't have all the ins and outs, but what I meant with my post, is that if she did go out the gate a bit hard. We are all human, it is in our nature to give it all. Somedays going out the gate hard brings in records, other days it doesn't. Can't hold it against her for trying her hardest.

There's your first mistake. Tegan is only part human.

I hear you, and you are well informed of the acknowledged tremendous abilities of Tegan; just to re-state what I mentioned a page back; it does SEEM like, on day O-N-E of a cross-africa record attempt, she landed in hospital with - ostensibly - heat stroke, and - by inference - could be imagined to have done too much, too quickly. Not day ten, nor day eight, but day one; but GREAT to hear over-exertion has been ruled out!

Her prep sounds solid, and here credentials speak for themselves - at a glance, it just SEEMS she did too much on day 1, but happy to see what the post-hospital prognosis, and will follow her every step of the way.

Cheers

This all transpired on the afternoon of day2. She was fine after Day1, had a good nights rest and set off on day2 .

I know how it seems. But with heat stroke things are seldom as they seem. A neighbour of mine got heat stroke surfing….

I do feel for Her ,the physical side will heal in a couple of days but mentally a person goes into a very depressive state. Especially with all the hype around the attempt and the crowdfunding.

Those 5 steps of depression comes to mind, but chin up Tegan all of us are still behind you.

She will need all the positive vibes from all of us. She is such a positive influencer of cycling especially for the lady cyclist.

Go Tegs

Just read on cycling weekly that she has abandoned the attempt.

Such as shame considering all the logistics etc leading up to it.

Says she will be back to try again.

is that an update or just an interpreatation of this post from last week?

We are still trying to figure out our exact plan going forward, but for now, it feels right to share this update and to thank everybody for their support and understanding.

I know obstacles are frustrating, but I also constantly remind myself that they are opportunities. This is how we learn humility, non-resistance and grace. So I am taking my lessons as best I can, with some good help from good (patient) friends.

With the blessings of the Adventure Gods and medical professionals - we will be back in February to start again, and to face whatever more obstacles might be on our path, with big smiles :)
