Some riders choose to ride in a way that has a higher or lesser risk of causing mechanicals (crashes, knocks, going off course, avoiding mud and rocks, bad shifting, etc). Largely it's plain bad luck. But assuming that a mechanical is always faultless is not correct.

Yeah I get that. It happens and then there are just those moments when sh@t happens. An upper jockey pulley wheel get ripped out by a wire wrapped in the cassette has little to do with riding style. Bash a rock? Probably going too hard for the conditions

puncture? Well that could be poor line choice or just not seeing the one stone amongst many that is lying in the wrong orientation .

pinch flat , that’s a poor technical decision on tyre pressure for conditions.

this Mtb game is about risk and reward all the time, but always we are a step away from disaster

I've missed a turn, gone into the grass and wrapped a discarded fence wire around my cassette. My fault for not staying on the course. It can happen (to me) 🤦‍♂️ But yeah, in most other cases those pesky sticks that love to jam things up are not my fault.

On another note, TA91 and Scott SRAM have not had any punctures in this race?

I haven’t noticed any so they have clearly improved in these areas. Also no technical issues

I'm not sure it was wire into SCR's RD. I think he lost the lower pulley?

Chris Blevins said he was behind Lukas when his derailleur pully hit the ground ..

Don't they do their own mechanical work? Possibly no thread locker used and the bold came out?

That's what I was thinking. There was not even a bolt left in the cage but lower pulley was still in.

Most Expensive Thread Lockers need time to dry.

There are some others based on super glue that dry immediately.

Not at that level, you go deep daily. There was another variable as the reason.

The level of here is so deep the Mariana Trench is a sea level for me

This is what racing is all about. For us if you honest you don’t want a run away for 8 day. You want it to go to the wire with your supporting team to be on top.

Dropper post not extending fully or other mechanical that strained muscles?

missed a feed?

wrong feed (unbalanced nutrition?)

Cape Epic is true test of life. Aleix Espagaro from MotoGP once came and he also saw all his ancestors and one he didn’t know

Guys easy in Andrei. 🤣 Many here wouldn’t have lasted past the prologue with Nino

Wonder how many drivetrains will be replaced today?

The bike shops providing maintenance packages will make a killing….recommending replacement to all their customers.

BTW, the bad news for the rear of the field is that there is heavier rain predicted for later this afternoon. The North Wester is still pumping here and I can see some heavier clouds rolling over the Helderberg mountain.

The technical parts will be a mess by the time the back markers ride them, chain suck and lots of walking…. Wonder if they will extend the cut off time?

Some of the locals here deserve the extra business. They have had a hard 3 years past them, with some having had to shrink back and some now operating from their homes.
