I doubt the actual temperature was above 40, but wasn't there so happy to be wrong.

The people who rode it definitely deserve the stories they have,  but a Garmin on a handle bar is not a reliable temperature measurement device.

On the morning of the race the predicted max weather for Oudtshoorn was 43 degrees, Attakwaskloof would typically be a few degrees hotter. Make sense that the 50s we saw on our Garmins could have been overstated, but definitely the heat in the kloof was at least in the mid-40s. There was virtually no wind on the coastal side of the kloof so even that would have been in the lower 40s

Yes, but it didn't 'really' feel like that. Unfortunately unless you were covered by a Stevenson screen and correctly calibrated, you can't possibly know how hot you felt........ 🤣

Can't have been up in the mountains either, maybe a small koppie at most...

I think there should be a law against this. In Aussie or Canada they would have one

It was HOT!

Even the Upington boys took a beating!

Some technical problems in the first half, but still 1h30min longer than normal ride time.

752 people on the official entry list. 473 finished. But given the weather forecast some people decided not to ride. An hour before the 11-hour cut-off the commentator said 46% had finished. I guess DNF is between 40% and 50% of those who started.

ok, max temp forecast from SAWS was indeed 42, so I will take back my comment that it probably wasn't in the 40s. That is proper hot.

I'm sure there is actual data in the klein karro, but I quickly pulled the reading from the wind mast near prince albert for the day - didn't reach the 42 predicted. (yes it is ambient from up the mast itself, but not that different from the ground at the time

It would be interesting to get some real technical feedback on this topic.

Many of us have seen the "temperature spike" when our bikes stand in the sun at the coffee stop....  sun directly onto the unit certainly has an impact, even more so when stationary.

Riding with the wind your body quickly overheats.  Pockets of dry hot air tends to cook me !

All data aside ..... RESPECT to the Attakwas riders !!!

it's probably up to 15'C difference. The temp on a watch/head unit is not to measure ambient temperature. It's just the internal temp of the device. Which of course is battery powered and sealed and running electronics.

It is mainly useless as an accurate reader of ambient temp unless it is in a stevenson screen/shaded. You can use it to measure water temp when scuba diving, but that's about the only thing that is useful as an accurate measure.

This is not rocket science, basic meterology. If you want accurate temp, Garmin do have a hardware solution of an external temp sensor, just don;t leave it in the sun.. Not cheap for what it is!

During a December ride I added ice to my bottle outside Paarl .... took about 25km before it was luke warm again.

HOT (ha ha) tip. Don't put ice and water in your bottles. Just put as many ice cubes as you can. The convection currents in the water melt the ice quicker. Whenever there is a bit of melted water, drink that to keep the ice cubes frozen for longer. (It's the same trick as defrosting a frozen steak in water going way quicker than in ambient air).

Where does one find these charts? Looked on WeatherSA and they've only got a few PDFs from the previous day.
