Wow, I was just about to ask what the surface was. That's a hill on a dirt road. Not even single-track? 🫣

Next video shot is a typical Tygerberg single track, slightly loose, not steep, certainly not technical ...riders going through the brush to get past slow riders ... then the odd walker ...

Matt Beers’ bike check

Definitely the year of 40t chainrings it seems 🥴 - Keegan Swenson also rocking one on Instagram along with a dead sexy blacked out Santa Cruz Blur.

I expect that it’s a) to allow a ridiculous top end but also b) to gain a few % better efficiency for the big dogs with less chain bend and a straighter chain line for their most used gears.

+2t on the chainring

The cooler weather forecasted will really assist fatigued bodies on Stages 678, however passage to the cooler days will have to be earned with 40 degree days on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Paarl, Boland is the scene for Wednesday's stage and temps at 37 degrees which will register about 43-45 on the measurement devices.spacer.png

Real question .... why do people enter the Epic when they have to walk the first single track ?

Was thinking exactly the same!

Joh tough crowd of hubbers

I’d say it’s a pretty step section and epic is 8 days so for some riders an early walk to save your legs for later is clever, or maybe they have a technical issue…..

You make an interesting prediction. Why do you think Paarl specifically ?

Paarl is much tougher than you think. Some of the toughest rides I did was at Rhebokskloof. It is the heat and the dust, plus the short steep hills that kills all your energy. Then we have not mentioned the amount of devil thorns in that area. I had to walk back down as I had so many thorns in my tyres that the sludge had no chance.

Will be interesting to see if they will finish the epic.

Okay, you missed my next post.

Couple of the early riders were walking the DOWN single track.

Short of a technical that did not make any sense .... thus my question.

I just checked the route. Guess going for a ride at Helderberg Farm is out for Sunday then. Most of the route at the later end of the week is around our town. Might even poach some time from my office at Technopark to go check some racing at G-Spot.
